"Toddlers should remain rear-facing in a convertible car seat until they have reached the maximum height and weight recommended for the model, or at least the age of 2."

Finally! :yahoo:

It was hard enough trying to stuff my kids in rear-facing seats until age 1 because they are both so tall. There's no way I could have done it until 2. But I don't have to worry about it any longer because my baby making days are long since behind me. :yahoo:

If you want your child to be safe, someone should be making size and age appropriate race harnesses and helmets. A fire suit would make them safer yet. And a safety cage.

ok, link didn't work but anyway. I don't see how it would be possible to keep them rear facing that long. My son is 15 months old & if he were rear facing, he would not be able to extend his legs without walking them up the seat.

Then we need to remodel cars to accommodate this rearward position.

hmmm, with a hole cut out of all the seats?

Well, part of me is being silly in response to our zeal to protect the kids that typically results in silliness, but, to be serious, how hard would it be to develop some sort of folding feature in seat backs that would do that very thing, allow a cavity for the kids legs?

And increased french fry storage?

We have flop out arm rests. I can see this.

Why don't they just pass a law - no kids in cars until they are 13 years or older?

Nothing to see here
This generation when they reach adulthood will be called the namby-pamby generation. Bubble kids are everywhere.

so then their feet or legs can be severed if you did have a crash....I know these aren't your views Larry, not slamming you!

That french fry storage would be great though!

:yeahthat:

When we were kids it was a different world...

We were born to mothers who smoked and drank
Our cribs were covered in lead based paint
No child proof lids no seat belts in cars
Rode bikes with no helmets and still here we are, still here we are
We got daddy’s belt when we misbehaved
Had three TV channels you got up to change
No video games and no satellite
All we had were friends and they were outside, playin’ outside

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

School always started the same every day
The pledge of allegiance then someone would pray
Not every kid made the team when they tried
We got disappointed and that was all right, we turned out all right

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

No bottled water, we drank from a garden hose
And every Sunday, all the stores were closed

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

And we always road around in the back of the station wagon, playing, no seats.

Be that as it may, I was sitting in the front seat of my dads station wagon, no seatbelt, I was four or so and he slammed on the brakes and launched me into the wind shield. Left one hell of a star on the glass. I ain't been right since.

First time I ever saw my mom mad at my dad.

Not every new thing or every new idea is bad.

I am iffy on this because while I am a proponent of extended rear facing it needs to be increased though education not laws. I think it should be up to a family to decide if extended rear facing will work for them.

Children are more flexible than adults and can sit comfortably rear facing even though we might not think they are. The argument is that it is safer on the neck of a child in the event of a crash. What is worse and more likely to cause death in a serious accident....a leg injury or a neck injury?

Here is a video...I am intentioanlly posting the link as oppsed to embeding the video because it is merely information and you can either click it or ignore it.

OK, but this gets to the core of the matter; we, as Americans, seem to be very happy to legislate and get one another ordered around to suit our own views rather than Nancy Reagan and 'Just say no'.

We don't want one another deciding for ourselves whether to smoke or not, what to eat, how much safety and caution to take, what radio programs, etc to listen to and so forth. We take all this caution, caution stuff yet also don't want people to be able to defend themselves from bad guys.

We WANT power over one another. We WANT to make one another behave as we see fit.

I agree and think it is silly, in general. While I support extended rear facing I would never suggest the laws to force it. I guess I just believe in changing minds through education, not [forced] laws.
especially since I switched my son right after one because he screamed bloody murder in the car, which quickly stopped when he was FF

See, here's the thing; business often colludes with government to get this stuff done.

Restaurant owners did NOT want to stick their necks out and choose to be smoking or non smoking. They wanted the government to impose it on all of them so that they didn't have to make a choice.

Same thing with cars and features. No one wants to add a $500 feature and hope it sells. They want everyone to have to add it so they, too, don't have to make a choice.
