About those LDS stories...

staring into the abyss
Basically, they finally figured out that their anonomous caller was a fake (although that seemed pretty likely from the start to me) and now they are digging for anything and everything to justify their actions.

Legally they've already justified their actions.

The police got a tip, which they believed was real. They asked for and received approval for a search, which turned up evidence of abuse, which led to a broader warrant. The first warrant was carried out in accordance w/ Texas laws. I can't think of any reason why the first would not hold.

There is some debate as to the breadth of the second warrant(s) and the supporting information since some has been sealed by the court and other information has been reported based on all sorts of unknown sources. The evidence of pregnancy in underage girls certainly points to statutory rape and child abuse, but nothings been proven.

...at least Texas didn't declare war on these folks.

Yeah, I suppose they should count themselves lucky that Janet Reno wasn't in town.

Seriously though, it is disconcerting to me that the government can invade your community, round up women and children, separate children from their mother's and perform DNA testing without any sort of parental consent. Individual rights and freedoms in this country are dwindling, and you've got a ton of folks out there just cheering it on. It is truly sad.

And you...

...do know, intellectually, they've likely been looking for an excuse to in there for some time, yes? This was obviously not some "Ohmygosh, chief! Get the phone! We gotta run to the rescue right now!" operation. They've been planning this.

...got a ton of folks that don't give a damn about free speech if it shuts up something they don't wanna hear.

We've got a ton of folks who don't give a damn about an individual right to self defense.

We've got a ton of folks who do not want you smoking.

We've got a ton of folks who want to be in charge of what you eat.

Why would we allow anyone building their own little world outside of our direct control to get away with it?

That right there is scary. An anonymous tip can be used as enough justification for a search warrant. Any crazy nut job with an axe to grind with someone can call in an anonymous tip.

They have yet to identify who this tip actually came from.

Judge orders genetic tests in polygamy case

The massive raid on the polygamist sect's West Texas compound was prompted by a call from someone identifying herself as a 16-year-old girl with the church who claimed her 50-year-old husband beat and raped her.

Texas Rangers, in their efforts to locate that girl, are questioning a Colorado woman with a history of making false police reports.

Rozita Estraletta Swinton, 33, was being questioned in connection with the April 4 raid. She already was under arrest on an unrelated charge of making calls in which she pretended to be a child being held in a basement in Colorado, according to Colorado Springs police.

so the initial call maybe so much :bs:

:eyebrow:

Rod Parker, a spokesman for the FLDS, contends that the state has essentially said that "if you're a member of this religious group, then you're not allowed to have children."

But Scott McCown, a former district court judge, said religion appears to play little or no role in the allegations about practices at the Eldorado ranch.

"No religious belief held by an adult justifies any kind of child abuse," McCown said. "No religious belief allows an adult to have sex with an underage girl."

I guess they are not looking Islam Yet ............

Where have they gone? After all the bruhaha about how all these young girls were being raped and abused, and church elders were guilty of all kinds of sexual torture and the such, the story seems to have died a very early death.

I started hearing stories that the alledged teenager who's phone call and allegations started all this doesn't actually exist, then I heard that the whole deal might have been a hoax all along. So we have the cops and courts rushing out in a flush of righteous indignation to take kids away from their parents, and I keep hearing stories of how this fact or that fact that was been reported has since turned out to be false. And now it looks like the story ha become hands-off for most media outlets.

So, what gives? Was there all this raping of twelve-year old girls, forced marriages, and rape beds, or was all that just the media rushing anything they heard to print without vetting it?

It's on the news every day. I even saw a small soundbite from one of the children's lawyers yesterday.
