Adoption Success Story Simone Biles Uses Her Platform To Back Abortion

Ironically, Biles is the biggest refutation to her own argument, which is probably why she felt the need to respond to critics who pointed this out. She was adopted by loving parents and raised in the Catholic Church. Instead of becoming another abortion statistic, she has gone on to become one of the most decorated athletes of all time.

However, as with her decision to quit competing in the middle of the Olympic Games, there doesn’t seem to be a thoughtful, balanced reason for her to come out in favor of abortion. It’s not like anyone asked her opinion on this issue, and after stirring up so much controversy, speaking out now just makes her seem like a troll.

Perhaps, like certain athletes and valedictorians, Biles wants to pivot to activism while she still has a large platform. To be fair, at 24, she is already past her prime as a gymnast. She could go on to coach, be a sports commentator, or run for public office (Texans like their athletes, after all). Or, in today’s cultural climate, she can speak on cultural issues.

Conspiracy theory: After being adopted herself and experiencing a wonderful life in that situation why would she suddenly come out as FOR abortion? Did she maybe find out some news after Olympic testing that made her change her mind and it is being kept hushed up and is the reason she really pulled out of competition? Hmmmm

Having a son born with cognitive disabilities - some of the people I know in support groups have conjectured Simone might, also. My son has skills and talents but he also has difficulty with self-control, judgment and social interaction. It may well be that she knows she cannot function without certain medication, and the Tokyo people aren't going to let her compete while using them.

That's my "conspiracy theory" on why she dropped out of competitions. What I don't know is, why she would DO that AFTER making the team.

She is also much older than most gymnasts are in the Olympics and by the next round she'll be about the oldest female gymnast around. While average age of participants has been increasing for forty years - it's probably not going to go past mid-20's (currently around 20).

But to the OP - I'm guessing, that, like a lot of people, she doesn't connect the two issues. Most of the time, they connect them when it's a talking point for either side. People make up their minds about abortion. Period. Anything else is a separate issue in their minds - or they do what most people do, rearrange what they believe to support their stated stance on abortion.

I can't judge whether or not the foster system is broken - it's a workable solution to perhaps an insolvable problem. Children are placed in foster care for any number of reasons, but the root of it is crisis. Death, abandonment, prison, poverty - a child in foster care is likely to have undergone things most kids don't face, and you can't "solve" it sometimes. I easily know a dozen people who grew up in foster care, including my own two foster brothers. One of them is still a mess; the other is doing well, married, family, owns his own business, doing VERY well financially. It is a much better than the orphanage system, where kids very often NEVER know family. THAT is the reason why I do support same sex couples adopting and fostering - no matter what you might think, having ANY family is much better than never having one. I've seen the stats.

Who could possibly give a flying f*** what Simone Biles has to say about abortion?

I don't think people DO. I don't think hardly anyone thinks anything of what I have to say, either, but I can still say it.

Right now, she has her fame and the spotlight and is quite possibly the best female gymnast this nation has ever produced - but fame is fleeting and in 20+ years, she'll have as big an audience as Mary Lou Retton or Nadia Comenici or Kerri Strug does, now. As in, zero.

Idunno.... Mary Lou might have a significant following with her menopause commercial audience.

I don't really understand this attack on Simone Biles. Are these people trying to say that all aborted fetuses would have gone on to be Olympic athletes? Because they don't understand how rare that actually is? And how we know that is that 40% of Americans think they could compete in the Olympics? Because they think everyone really does get a trophy?

Anyway, this is the sort of thing I expect from the Federalist. It's MSNBC for Republicans.

I don't either. Well I suppose I do, but it strikes me as massively unfair. My only beef with her is if she did know this might happen, she probably should have not gone out for the team.

I feel like that beef shouldn't be with her, it should be with her trainers etc. These athletes are pushed so hard and pressured to perform, even when injured. I find it amazing that in the end she did manage to stand up to them and say no.

With the exception of MyKayla Skinner - who HAD BEEN retired - she is the oldest on the team by anywhere from 3-6 years.
It is somewhat unusual for a 24+ year old to compete in gymnastics. On the other hand, I am sure there are many past Olympians who GOAT qualification would make it hard to say "no" to.

Being an Olympians must be hard on them. Have you seen the Relief Factor with Mark Spitz. He has aged badly. Wouldn't recognize.

So, I'm gonna go out on a limb and put out a little conspiracy theory here...
Simone recently had an abortion herself...
And it was playing with her mind recently in Tokyo...

Biles isn't wrong about the foster care system.
Maybe, but advocating death to the unfortunate could imply a stance for a retroactive abortion policy that would eliminate all homeless, mentally deficient, or even immigrants with no apparent value. I believe that was already attempted and the ovens ran 24/7/365 for years.
