Thank you so much for helping! We have a senior coming to us tomorrow from Tri-County - she wasn't going to make it out w/o help. She started off at the Humane Society and was transferred to Tri-County, so her days were numbered. I'll post pictures soon. She's so Cute too!

Speaking of the older dogs, our little senior beagle mix "Hazel" (we rescued from Tri-County's death row) was supposed to be spayed today, but the clinic said the blood work showed her to be too anemic to do the surgery today so .............. they said feed her a high quality food for a month and bring her back again to retest. Also means we have to be extra cautious about where she is for a month to be sure no intact males get to her. I wonder why she is so anemic? I ask this because she had been at Tri-County for 5 weeks, and prior to that she had been at The Humane Society for an unknown period of time. I know they fed her regularly (even though she does still look to be underweight but that's probably just due to be being older), so does this mean the cheaper foods (mostly what is donated?) is no good for seniors?

I would like some recommendations on a quality food that I can feed her to help her improve, Hazel is approximately 10 years old (probably older, I'll ask my vet for his opinion). I will ask the vet about a possible supplement for her and what his recommendations is for food for her. Can't wait to get her home later. She's such a sweetie, although quite the barker. Happy despite her confinement in the shelter! Those shelter folks ROCK! The staff and the volunteers make such a difference in the lives of those critters by all they do in walking them, interacting with them, and overall just giving the critters all they can to help them.

Tri-County gave her the name Hazel, we may or may not change it. The Humane Society said she likely came in as a stray since she didn't have a name when they transferred her to Tri-County. The record that Tri-County had when she came says she came from Port Tobacco.

I looked this up so far:

"Anemia is a defined as a deficiency of red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the circulatory system. Adult dogs are anemic when the concentration of red cells in whole blood is less than 37 percent by volume. The normal range is 39 to 60 percent. Red cells are produced by the bone marrow and have an average life span of 110 to 120 days. Old red cells are trapped by the spleen and removed from the circulation. The iron they contain is recycled to make new erythrocytes.

The purpose of red blood cells is to carry oxygen. Thus, the symptoms of anemia are caused by insufficient oxygen in the organs and muscles. Signs include lack of appetite, lethargy, and weakness. The mucous membranes of the gums and tongue become pale pink to white. In dogs with severe anemia, the pulse and respiratory rate are rapid, and the dog may collapse with exertion. A heart murmur may be heard."

Maybe she is anemic due to fleas that she might have had from the previous shelter. Her nose looks good & wet, so maybe the labs were wrong. I know that if blood is drawn from a patient, and it is hemolized, all values are wrong, so the lab has to be re-drawn. This usually happens if the person drawing the blood goes through the vein, or if it's improperly handled, and sits out too long.

that doesnt mean chit.... :coffee:

there are MANY things in the VET world that could cause the dog to be anemic..... my first thought is fleas, poor diet and could even be a tick issue as well... or worse.

That actually happened to me at Patient First not long ago when they let an inexperienced person do the blood draw - it hurt like HE## too. They said they either needed to redraw to retest or they had to call an ambulance to send me to the ER based on my value being so low.

I assume the person who called me from the clinic must think that proper nutrition will remedy the issue, but it seems that there may be something else going on IF the value is correct? I will ask for the data from the blood work so I can provide it to my vet. I realize she needs a lot of basic care but I don't want to do too much to her in a short span of time either. Like I will need advise on how soon to give her things like a flea/tick bath, Advantage for the fleas/ticks, she'll need a HW test before I can give her HW meds, and I KNOW she needs dental work also. It's obvious this little girl is gonna get lots of love as my relatives are nuts about beagles. I can't wait for them to meet her. Since she won't be getting spayed today, I can take her to meet everyone sooner. I think the clinic is only doing Rabies today, which is fine, as I think we need to take things slow with her. My vet is out of town until next Tuesday, so that soon enough for other vaccines she needs, or I can wait and get the clinic to do the rest when she gets spayed.

NAME - here's what I know about her .... she's HAPPY as can be, and she looks to have lost a few teeth, and she pulls on the leash (she wants to sniff then go then sniff then go), and she barks a lot and LOUD! Boxy was a barker (I miss that nutty dog!) and my boy at home now isn't a barker. So I kinda miss the barking you know? It'll be nice to have a barker around again. I HOPE she is ok with cats. If not we will work on that. Anyway the point of telling what I know about her is to try to figure out a name for her. Or should I leave it be at Hazel (what Tri-County named her)? I can't wait to pick her up after work :yahoo: .

I am curious about her anemia source after reading that stuff in the link I posted. I am pretty sure she is housebroken because she only went potty outside while at the shelter (At Tri-County they close the doors to the outdoor part of the kennel simulate being "indoors" and the dogs should hold it a while. So she was only pottying outside. Every time I took her for a walk (several walks on different days) she would pee several times and poop - good girl Hazel! This part thrills me because I already have the puppy in potty training and 2 is just double the work. The size of the poop that comes out of her should be that of a 40 lbs dog, not a little girl like her LOL.

There is yet another chi there named Norman. Very laid back !

I walked him and held him. When I tried to pull him away from my body to put him back in the cage, he wrapped his paws around my neck to hold on. Made me sad to put him back in the cage. What a sweet dog he is.

Call The Humane Society in Waldorf 301-645-8181 - I expect he will go fast so I wouldn't be surprised if someone grabs him today so call ASAP. They are open from 1-8pm today. They said they have never seen a Chi that was as laid back as Norman is ..... truly a sweetheart. They kept saying Norman wanting to stay with me was a sign - oh no .....

Work day for me tonight, so no chance to stop by. My Tucker was a sweetie there, too - didn't bark when all the other dogs were barking, didn't shake. Just gazed into my eyes and scootched up as close as he could get in his cage. I am surprised he was still there when I saw him, but I think it was meant to be that he would become ours. Did you see the painting of him that my sister had commissioned for me?
