After 14 Years I Have A New GSD

I got up last wednesday and let Rex, my German Shepherd Dog, outside to take care of his morning business. He layed out in the sun for about an hour, and then came in, stretched out in his favorite spot, and went to sleep. I went to feed him at lunchtime and discovered that he had passed away. He was a fantastic dog and a great companion. My family had discussed getting another GSD puppy in the future but not anytime soon, but Rex's absence was really hard to deal with, so we went on a puppy search.

Anyway, we made an 8-hour trip to central Georgia sunday morning and picked up RJ (Rex Jr.) from a small breeder. He was one of two litters that dropped a week apart (nine males/five females) so we got a great price on him. So... after a 14-year lull we're once again back to the nibbled toes, chewed shoes, and gnawed furniture, but we've got our GSD house back in order. :yay:

What a blessing for him to go in his sleep like that.

Good luck with the new pup, and please post some pictures. :flowers:

Here are some pictures. What we really thought was neat was that the sire is a black/tan GSD, but the dam is snow white, and this pup had just a tiny patch of white on his forehead.

I don't think I could ever not have a GSD in the house. Mine is 9 and he is the 1st pet my wife and I got as a married couple. :yay: It's hard to believe that our 110lb monster was that small at one time.

That was quick. What a cutie.

I want a puppy... :bawl:

Wait, peeing in the house, walks, chewed up shoes... nevermind.

I just want to play with a puppy and give it back. Yeah, that's it. :yay:

The dog I had growing up died in a similar manner. She was a barnyard mutt, was hit by a UPS truck as a puppy and still lived to 18. Great dog. The BEST ever. By the time she passed, she was mostly blind, hunched back, senile and unable to go up and down steps on her own. During the cold months, my parents would fire up a kerosene heater in the kitchen, and she LOVED to lay in front of it and just bake. On her final day, she waited for my father to come home from work, he carried her outside to do her business, and then back in. She hobbled over to my mother and gave her a lick and got some petting, then did the same to my father. Then she went over to the kerosene heater and lay down in front and went to sleep for the last time.

If you still like your wife, you're lucky!

I don't know why, but GSDs have always been so easy to housebreak. The puppy eats, drinks, plays, and then falls asleep for an hour or so. When he wakes up we take him outside and to his "spot" where he's gotten used to doing his business, then he runs back inside. Three days and no messes yet, and if he's like our old dog he'll start headed for the door when he needs to do his thing.

Aww he is so cute. I'm sorry about your other dog though. My sons favorite dog is a GS. I told him maybe one day we would get one for now we just have a very spoiled beagle.

That is what all parents tell their children to pacify them.... I do it all the time. We will see, that is what I say.

MiniMe wants a weimeraner. They're so cute, and we'd thought of getting one before we got Cody, but fell in love with him first. He saw one at Sonic and said "When we're done with Cody, can we get a dog like that?". :ohwell: He's since moved on to "When Cody is too big for his crate, can we get a dog like that?".

My boys are already sticking our Jack in his grave. He is only 4 years old.
"Mom, when he dies can we get another dog?" :faint:

Beautiful pup Bruz! Sorry to hear about Rex. You are SO lucky to have had him pass peacefully in his sleep though.

We had to put our GSD down last night. I knew it was one of the possibilities that may have popped up but it doesn't make it any easier. I'm going to miss my big boy.

Man that sucks - took me almost 10 years to get over losing my dog before I got another one. I don't envy the way you feel today.

I'm so sorry to hear about your GSD. It sure is tough to lose one of them. I've had a lot of dogs, mostly labs, when I was younger but they never seemed to form the same kind of bond that the GSDs do. The labs were friendly, but tended to do their own thing most of the time, whereas the GSDs I've owned always seemed interested in being a part of whatever the family was doing.

I'm glad I didn't wait to get another GSD. My wife and I had talked about waiting for awhile, but the hole in our lives was too big.
