(CNN)At least one person is dead and five wounded -- including four who are critically injured -- after a shooting Sunday at a church in Laguna Woods, California, the sheriff's department said.

"All victims are adults and are en route to the hospital," the Orange County Sheriff's Department said in a tweet Sunday. "One victim is deceased at the scene."
Another person has minor injuries, said the tweet.

Police have a suspect in custody, Orange County Undersheriff Jeff Hallock said during a news conference on Sunday evening. He is believed to be an Asian man in his 60s who doesn't live in the area, said Hallock.

Suspect In California Taiwanese Church Shooting Charged With Hate Crime​

NBC News reported that prosecutors changed their complaint to include an additional hate crime enhancement, alleging that the suspect killed Dr. John Cheng because of “his race, color, religion, nationality, or country of origin,” per a statement by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

“After a review of additional evidence in this case, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office has filed an amended criminal complaint to include hate crime allegations,” District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement, per the outlet.

The suspect was born in Taiwan and grew up there after his family was made to leave mainland China when communists took over. Although he was born in Taiwan and lived in Las Vegas, investigators discovered documents in his car that showed his “hatred of the Taiwanese people.”
