ALWAYS WATCHING I went to Aldi’s new concept store and felt like I was stealing on my way out

TikToker TravelingRat said that she felt like she was stealing when she collected her items and waltzed right out of the store.

Aldi implemented state-of-the-art technology to launch SHOP&GO in early 2022 - a shopping experience that allows customers to collect their groceries and walk out without stopping to pay.

Similar to Amazon Go, the store uses surveillance cameras on the ceiling in order to track what the shopper picks up and charges them through an app.

All consumers have to do is sign up for an account and add their credit card information before entering the store.

The tech will capture what items are picked up and charge the shopper a few minutes after they leave the store.

This is not foe me. I know I am old and technology has passed me by.
I can barely use a computer, my smart phone is much smarter than me, they can and do follow me in my computerized car they can listen to me while I am driving it they have me on video almost everywhere I go.

I want a store where there is a cashier, where I can pay cash for what I buy and go home and not wait for a bill to come.

Not a chance would I go for this. I find at least one error almost every single time I shop. Says 2 for $5.99, actually charges me $3.49 a piece, etc. etc.

I can remember this when I see what prices ring up in front of me, I won't remember it a month later when reviewing my credit card bill.

Don't you think they know that?

If implemented properly, ideally it would take care of those who grab and dash. I was going to add "and lower our costs due to theft', but the cost to implement would cover it well. In the Amazon implementation, the door wouldn't open until every item was accounted for. In practice, it would never work at a place like WalMart (in regards to theft deterrent).

What could go wrong?

Yeah, put me in the NO column for this one too. This is why I like self-checkout - I can see what's being rung up, the price, and if I'm getting the sale I came for.

Young people come across as so incredibly lazy that they don't think about things like prices as long as they can save 15 seconds of their oh so busy lives. They'll flock to it just because *checks notes* "TikToker Traveling Rat" says so. Because TikToker Traveling Rat is certainly a reliable consumer source and not a paid propagandist.

If someone did a grab and dash, no app could identify them. It could only go, "Yeah, someone made off with a 6 of beer and 8 bags of Fritos."

I'm guessing you would have to have the app on your phone so the system knows who you are and can charge your credit card on file.

That's why it can't work. Can't lock the doors to everyone for one individual, and criminals won't be dumb enough to have an active app on the phone.

The Amazon system wouldn't allow entry as well as exit without sensing the app. Again, would never work in a WalMart. Someone else opens the door and they bull their way in and out. Maybe even bust out the glass doors.

My kids often observe - "Dad don't buy nothin' that ain't on sale". I'm not a fan of coupons, because most of the ones I've found are nigh unto useless - a pittance discounted for items I never intend to buy. And even FINDING coupons can be hard enough, I still have a hard time with digital coupons, because I can't figure out how most of them work, and the checkers at the register don't either.

Happens WAY too often, I will note a sale of something like five dollars off if you buy fifteen bucks worth of included items - and I do it - and the register not only doesn't record it, but doesn't even mark the SALE items that I bought to reach fifteen. I have to ask and insist on it. Self- checkout is famous for doing nothing.

If I may ...
For your consideration ...

Hummmm..... I wonder if a faraday cloth or bag to conceal an item could work in a store such as this?
