I would guess because the dogs alerted the owner of the fire. Maybe had the dogs been cowards and hide under the bed, everyone would have burned, but the dogs woke up the lady and girl and therefore they were heros because the woman and girl got out alive.

If the dogs had dragged a baby from the burning house, they would have been herioic, but running around barking is not.

In response to your question, my dogs probably would bark a couple times and then run away from the fire. I doubt they would have jumped on me to wake me up and then refuse to come out of the house after I was outside. I love my dogs but they are cowards.

These dogs, however, were not. Notice how in the article there is no mention of a fire alarm going off. It was the dogs that woke up the people and allowed them to get out of the house safely.

Also, it doesn't mention if the dogs somehow got trapped in the house but since the house was gutted it is easy to assume that they were. At this point they were probably barking to let people know they were still in there.

I think it was they assumed the dogs were still looking for the kid.

Dogs are protective - they were protecting THEIR territory. Even though it was on fire the dogs only knew to stay and protect. God Bless them.
