America and Antisemitism

I always thought it was because they were responsible for the crucifixion of Christ.

The Jew hating savages raving in the streets and on social media are godless heathens. Also Jesus was a Jew.

I've heard that excuse given but it just shows what ignorant aholes people can be. That can't possibly be the real reason.

I stick with "the cult leaders told them to hate, so they do."

My direct paternal great grandfather was born in the Jewish community of what is now Butrimonys, Lithuania.
As I understand, his family were anti-Zionists. He and a maternal side cousin were sent to America in 1886 at age 14
to keep them from being impressed into the Tsar's army. Lithuania was part of the Russian Empire then.
His wife was a French-Canadian Catholic who converted to marry him. Very few of their descendants are still Jewish.

The Jews in Butrimonys were wiped out in WW2 by Waffen SS and Lithuanian collaborators.

But wasn't that anti-Zionism based on the belief that there couldn't be a new nation of Israel without the coming of the Messiah?

I believe so. Great grampa was born into an Orthodox family. His beliefs shifted over time and he was Conservative when he died.

Once again, Vrai, you have managed to leave me scratching my head.

My comment was meant to explain why the Jew-hating had been going on for so long, not about what's happening today.

Yes, Jesus was a Jew. He was also a rebel and he went about contradicting everything the Jewish leadership of the day was saying. It was those Jews who urged Pontius Pilate to execute Jesus.

As far as "the cult leaders told them to hate, so they do", I agree with that statement in regards to what's happening today.

I offered the crucifixion of Jesus as a reason for the long-standing Jew-hatred. I hope that doesn't make me an ignorant ahole.

Okay, I see :peace: I understood you to be saying that's why it's happening today. And no, I don't think you're an ignorant ahole.

Discrimination and persecution of Jews predates Jesus.

475 BC Haman attempts genocide against the Jews. (Purim).

63 BC 2,000 Jews die and many more are sent into the diaspora as a result of Pompey's conquest of the East.

59 BC Cicero criticizes Jews for being too influential in public assemblies. He also refers to Jews and Syrians as "races born to be slaves."

I've been saying this on here, for years. I don't get Jewish hate. For a lot of reasons.
For one thing - most of the time, unless you look closely - you have NO IDEA this or that person is a Jew. Unless your name is Horowitz or Shapiro, you often have to be TOLD if someone is a Jew. Because they look like everybody. I remember being in a group of friends, one of them had an obvious Jewish name and occasionally mentioned Jewsih things, even though he didn't speak Yiddish or go to temple.

He told me, Sam - do you realize everyone ELSE IN THIS ROOM, is Jewish? None of them had typical Jewish names. I had no idea.

Unless they're wearing a yarmulke - you just probably don't know.

That is hugely different with other groups people hate or discriminate against. You can tell if someone is black. Or Asian. MOST of the time, Latino especially if they start speaking Spanish or playing Latin music. Pretty good chance you can tell a Muslim. If you're paying attention - usually tell if someone is gay. YOU CAN TELL.

To my knowledge - Jews don't ever represent a physical threat to anyone. I've been threatened, chased, robbed, MOLESTED and attacked by other groups. I would probably laugh myself to death if I ever saw a band of Hasidic Jews trying to come at me.

It might explain why, throughout my childhood, my bestie was almost always - the Jewish kid in the neighborhood. I just didn't and still don't get it.

Having grown up and gone to school in Montgomery County in the 50's and 60's, most of my friends were Jewish. I don't get the hatred thing either but it sure has been around for along time (longer than I thought, thank you, Monello).
