America Is Responsible For Almost None Of The Plastic In The Ocean.

In reality, your straw usage has almost no impact on the ocean whatsoever. That's partly because the "500 million straws a day statistic" is invented, and partly because the United States as a whole contributes very, very little to the plastic waste problem. About 60% of the plastic in the Ocean comes from five Asian countries: China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand. Indonesia's Citarum River, the most polluted river on Earth, is essentially a massive trash heap on a giant aquatic conveyor belt. Every day, 20,000 tons of waste and 340,000 tons of wastewater are dumped into it and then ferried to the ocean. In places like Vietnam, plastic in the water is the least of anyone's concerns. Raw sewage is discharged directly into water ways, turning the rivers toxic.

In all, and speaking just of plastic pollution, Asia and Africa account for 95% of the problem. That leaves only 5% of the ocean's plastic debris to be split between the continents of Europe, North America, South America, and Australia. According to this chart, Brazil is the worst plastic offender outside of Asia and Africa. 23 European countries, collectively, are 18th on the list. The United States comes in 20th. America, with its population of 330 million, is dwarfed on the plastic pollutant list by countries like Sri Lanka with 310 million fewer people.

We could collect all of the straws in North America, bundle them together and shoot them into the Sun, and the state of the ocean would hardly be improved at all. Indeed, we could stop using plastic altogether and it would barely make a dent in the problem. Does that mean we should be totally unconcerned about our own waste? No, but it does mean that our waste is, comparatively, not a significant problem. The ocean is being destroyed by Asia and Africa. Until they get their acts together, only minimal progress can be made.

Gurps...I believe you are 100% correct. I have German friend who DAILY links videos of plastic waste...possible innovations...garbage sweepers...science labs...all focused on the plastic in our oceans. BUT BUT BUT...if one looks carefully at the labeling, advertisements, and types of trash: Its MOSTLY Asian. So...We should define this as an ASIAN problem...just like CO2 production. (Its crappy Chinese coal, and cars,...and burning everything.)

So...WE now have bio-plastics and edible plates, and a pile of guilt...and, Asia does almost nothing about the problem they create.

Side note
I went kayaking today (5.5 miles) on the Middle Pax R. after the heavy flooding. Water must have been gushing from a thousand streams. I did not pass ONE floating bottle, can, or plastic lawn chair in the water...not ONE. This is a testament to scientific management of waste AND an informed public that recycles. WE do a pretty good job regarding waste management. Asia is still trapped in 1905.

No doubt but the OP was about the source of the plastic trash. I have fished the Ches Bay and offshore for 45 years and seldom see much more than a few bottles each trip but even one is too many.... The island of floating plastic trash the left likes to use as fodder for their feel good memes and documentaries is largely of Asia origin.

But...but...we must DO something!!! :cds: :jameo:

Even if doing something has no affect whatsoever, or (as is usually the case) has a deleterious affect...remember, class, it's all about the what? That's right: it's all about the Feeeeels!

Much like much of our clean air standards drive business's to foreign countries not so clean.
Certainly clean air is great, but our clean air does no hover over us, The air moves.
What good is to have pure air here but dirty air over where our business's have gone.
We end up with their dirt.

.

Is this the reason for the strawman comments on this forum? Just wondering.
