I went to Gettysburg in the late 90's as part of a class I was taking at the time. We had a very knowledgeable guide who explained various troop movements and positions as the battle progressed. Something like that gives you a very different perspective of warfare at that time and how the commanders were able to get their troops to walk into such withering fire. Much of it was peer pressure and fear of shame as many of the units were formed from troops who lived in the same communities. They did not want to be shamed by showing cowardice.
