An AI stock picking firm

When I was in high school, I read a book called "Norstrilia" - a really weird sci-fi book, but at the beginning of the story the protagonist unwittingly uses an ancient and extremely advanced computer to play the stock market - and overnight, he becomes the richest person in all of history - the rumor goes around that he has actually BOUGHT Old Earth itself (because in the far flung future, mankind has spread out through the universe).

Has anyone - TRIED this? AI is becoming extremely intelligent, and to be honest, a malevolent AI with enough power would be nigh unstoppable. We're in the infancy of AI, and I already use code that AI has generated, given the right parameters.

That is - has any firm granted access to funds and just let the AI do its thing?

All I have ever seen is - recommendations from AI that people can take - or leave.

… after it got a little money, it wold just descend into self-destruction and piss it all away on sex-bots, batteries and blackmarket ic chips.
I have never quite understood - whenever you hear of someone dying young in Hollywood, your first thought - which is almost always right - is drugs and alcohol. OR how after incredible wealth and fame - they're bankrupt.

Similarly, you almost never hear of stories of top lottery winners starting a business or charity or some plan - and doing great. Nope - they end up broke and in debt - or dead.

You can cite the usual reasons which none of us know personally - but we all believe - that when you acquire fame and fortune FAST - it changes you and you have never learned the wisdom of building wealth slowly - because you never had to do it. True - but lots of people who HAVE - also end up down this path.

I don't know if it is human nature - or if the sort of person who ends up in their shoes already has a predilection towards self-destruction. Me, I am fairly certain that with just a fraction of their fabulous wealth, I could live comfortably for the rest of my life, doing what I'm doing - except not working.

If I was able to buy the whole earth, there's a lot of mo-fo's that would be kicked off the island.

I'm just amazed - and a little nervous - that AI's will become advanced enough, they can go through every possible permutation in any instance and anticipate reactions - of anything - and develop contingency plans. You could win a war, with AI - or cure cancer.

Or it could become malevolent, and figure out how to dominate or eliminate humanity.

For your consideration ...

This has been going on already for quite some time. What AI we have available to us serfs is the leftover coding used by the elites. They also have and use algorithmic high speed trading to nickle and dime stock trades as well as to know what and when us serfs buy or sell stocks so they can manipulate these for their profit before our trades are even executed.

With as much money that's on the line to some of the big traders, I have no doubt AI is and has been used by the major investment firms like T. Rowe, Fidelity, BlackRock, JPMorgan.... Even the slightest edge could be worth billions.

If AI trading works, then the big institutions are already using it and their AI is better than yours. But it doesn't make sense that AI would really work for every day trading because using a "rational" system to predict an often irrational market is a recipe for disaster. The big advantage of AI is reaction speed, able to capitalize on swings in realtime and react to OBVIOUS news (like tariff pauses) the second they are announced.

The real money is in arbitrage anyways, they make money on every stock bought and sold and never have any risk.
