Anal Glands?

Isaiah 55:8-9
My yellow lab has a red, swollen (either infected or impacted) anal gland on the right side.
Anyone want to come express it for her? :barf:
Ok, so seriously, Is this something I can do or do I have to take her to the vet? I just noticed today that it was red and swollen. She's never had this problem before.
I tried to express it but nothing is coming out!!!! How do I know if I'm doing it right?

TIA for your advice!

Better to be safe than sorry...I'd take her to the vet...

YES this is something you can do. Get a pair of gloves and some vaseline or lubricant because your gona be putting you finger up the dogs butt. After inserting your finger have a paper towel in your other hand because what comes out will make you barf and it's hard to get rid of the smell on fabric. Insert finger at 4 o'clock for the right side and 8 o'oclock for the left. You should be able to feel them and take your finger and press while holding the paper towel in front of butt cause it's gona fly. If you get puss out he needs to be on antibiotics because it's infected. It's very easy to do on larger dogs. Make sure you have someone holding the dog when you insert finger

Smells like death :barf:
I'm all for doing this kind of stuff at home and I have... BUTT... you're dealing with a hurting pup, I'd rather have the Dr. or groomer do it.
I purposely didn't clip my dog's nails when I sent her to the Vet b/c her paws were raw on her pads.... I didn't want to cause her anymore discomfort, let them deal with it.

Thanks, you guys are the best!
It ruptured this morning with blood, pus and brown gunk all over the place.
I took her to the vet and $193 dollars later with a months worth of antibotics, some prednisone, and some tube I have to manually insert into the hole of the rupture. She's resting comfortably now.
They also flushed it with saline to get the rest of the impaction out.

Thanks again!

Poor dog. Very painful. Next time take her to the vet.
Only about $40 to get them done. If you do not know what you are doing DO NOT try it yourdelf.

is it possible for them to drain by themselves or if the dog was to do something (like butt scooting) to make them drain?

bruno has had it happen once we noticed her scooting and since we were new dog owners we took her to teh vet and the vet said her anal glands were impacted they go the gunk out and since then she hasn't had any problems but if she does we are going to take her to the vet asap as we don't want to deal with what the person who wrote this post has to deal with now.

$40!:faint: When I take my dogs in to get bathed, it's included with the bath price and when I need to take Archer just to get his done, it's only $10.

Anals will normally express themselves when dogs go to the bathroom but sometimes they don't. When dogs scoot it can sometimes express them but not always. There is normally a nasty odor that comes when your dog needs them expressed. I know with Archer, he tries to chew the area and when he walks by it smells like he has a "hanger on".

I take my dog to the vet. I might be wrong, might have been $30. Have not had to have it done in a while. He is 170 lbs and does not like having it done. I will pay whatever to make sure it is done right and nobody gets hurt.

They tried to argue with me the first time I took him in. Said it is very uncommon for large breed dogs to have this problem. I said look, i know my dog and he smells like s##t,Somethings up. When she lifted his tail up she bought fell on the floor from the smell.

roxie whoever told you that was full of shiat bruno (stbernard) has had it happen 1x already and all we said is she is scooting around and they said bring her in now so we did and they fixed the problem. I would never attempt to do it myself as I have no clue what I am doing and don't want to hurt my precious babygirl.
