I suppose he won it for his efforts to turn the world's greatest Republic into a Socialist country. Or perhaps for his efforts to destroy Israel. Maybe he got it for living great contribution to literary genious in writing his book "Dreams of my Father", where he turns a drunken Kenyan, spreading his pollen hither and yon, into a role model.

He gets to take his wife and kids shopping in France(on the American tax payers) again

I not sure what to make of this development. I'm torn between feeling that this means that Obama has officially jumped the shark, and feeling that this means that reality, in and of itself, has officially jumped the shark - that surreal-ity has finally finished moving all its stuff in and set up permanent residence on our planet. Not sure. Not sure.

On another note, am I the only one that thinks the use of the expression 'jumped the shark' has jumped the shark?

Check out the accomplishments of the recent past winners:

  • Martti Ahtisaari - "for his important efforts, on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts"

  • Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Al Gore) - the panel was established in 1988. So their work spans nearly 2 decades before being considered and winning.

  • Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank - Promoted the idea of microcredit. His work extends all the way back to the 1970s. Over 30 years of work to win the Nobel.

  • IAEA and Mohamed ElBaradei - ElBaradei became the senior staff member in 1984. 20+ years of work to win the Nobel.

  • Wangari Muta Maathai - Work extends back to the early 90s to establish peaceful free elections in Kenya. It was her staunch stance against the oppressive ruling government that won her the prize. Nearly 15 years of work.

  • Shirin Ebadi - Spent decades fighting for womens' rights in the mideast (Iran). Quote from her: "In the last 23 years, from the day I was stripped of my judgeship to the years of doing battle in the revolutionary courts of Tehran, I had repeated one refrain: an interpretation of Islam that is in harmony with equality and democracy is an authentic expression of faith."

  • Jimmy Carter - "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development"

We could go through every winner and see they have a long record of work. It appears the standard has changed. All you have to do now is say things that make folks feel good. No real history of work is required.

Since the vast majority of Obama's "public life" (to this point) was spent working for ACORN, why weren't they a co-winner?

The nomination for the Peace Prize had to be in by February 1st. Yes: Obama won the Peace Prize when he was in office less than 11 days.

Yes: That is Jumping the Shark.

As soon as I heard the news, I knew the hate would be boiling over in the Forums; but, in all honesty, I was totally shocked to hear it myself. This award does not follow the normal pattern of what the Nobel Committee looks for based on past receipients.

Although, years and years of work has not always been a requirement. They often look at one's single accomplishment and even efforts.

So, this is not enitrely far fetched.

What single accomplishment?

With this and Al Gore (who did absolutely nothing to promote PEACE), this has proven the Nobel Foundation to be politically motivated. This was meant to be a slap in the face of the Bush era.

When the US goes in bombing Pakistan and Iran do you think they will take the prize away?

I havent seen any hate boiling over here. Mostly it's thought of as a joke.

Certainly it isnt far-fetched, after all Al Gore got the same prize.

The surprise is that Cindy Sheehan hasnt gotten one yet, and neither has Jeremiah Wright.
