Unable to hold back sobs during a dramatic press conference, Walter Koenig confirmed that his son Andrew had taken his own life and had been found in Vancouver's Stanley Park on Thursday morning.

The younger Koenig was discovered during a search party consisting of friends and family.

"My son took his own life," an emotional Walter Koenig told a rapt press corp.

"The only other thing I want to say is, we've already said what a great guy he was, what a great human being," Koenig said before breaking down into tears. "He was obviously in a lot of pain."

Andrew Koenig, best known for playing "Boner" on 'Growing Pains,' has been missing in Vancouver since February 14. Despite many police searches in the area, he was not seen in the densly-wooded marsh area where he was eventually found.

Police declined to give many details of the disovery out of "respect of the family." A police spokesperson did add that foul play was not suspected.

Koenig, 42, was last seen on Feb. 14 and missed his flight out of the Olympic host city two days later, according to a statement from TV host Dave Holmes on MaximumFun.org. Authorities are searching for the actor, who has recently been working as a camera operator on the comedy podcast 'Never Not Funny.'

Neighbors at the 41-year-old's Venice, Calif., apartment complex tell PEOPLE he moved out several weeks ago before heading to Vancouver, B.C., to visit friends. "He cleared out his apartment," about three weeks ago, neighbor Mark Clough tells PEOPLE. "It started off as a garage sale, and eventually, he put everything out in front of the apartment, like he was giving it away."

Andrew's father Walter played Chekov in the 'Star Trek' TV series and films. The elder Koenig told PEOPLE he received a note from Andrew on February 16, but it did nothing to alleviate his concerns.

"He sounded despondent," said Walter. "Nobody has seen this [note] but my wife and I."

"He went to visit some friends in Toronto and after there, he went to Vancouver," explained his father. "It's a place where he felt very comfortable. He lived there for a few years."

Later on Wednesday, Walter Koenig said during a press conference that, if anything, he just wants to know if his son is alive. "I just want to know you're okay ... If it means you just want to stay here, that's okay. You don't have to come back. Just let us know that's your intention."

While in Vancouver, he was staying with burlesque artist Jenny Magenta, who took to Facebook on Friday to ask for help in finding Koenig. Numerous celebrity friends have used social media to aid the search, including Sarah Silverman, Alyssa Milano and Felica Day. Comedian Joel McHale wrote, "No joke, here. 'Soup' family friend Andrew Koenig missing in Vancouver."

His 'Growing Pains' co-star Kirk Cameron is offering help. "I am praying for his family during this time of distress and for his safe return," Cameron said in a statement, reports PEOPLE. "Andrew, if you're reading this, please call me."

I am going to a funeral today for a kid 16 years old who committed suicide.

Today so many kids are doing away with themselves. WTF is wrong with todays kids? You have a fight with your girlfriend and you decide to teach her a lesson by committing suicide? Give her two weeks and she will forget who you are. You lose a job an want to die?? Give me a break.

When you are 70 years old and wake up every morning hurting in every joint in your body and your feet swell so you can hardly walk, and you thank God that you woke up to another day ,it looks so really , really stupid that a young man with his whole life before him and a body that is fresh as the driven snow, would waste that life, it truly pisses you off.

:yeahthat:

When I was 16 a friend and classmate killed himself. Leaving a 3 page note behind. What a terrible waste.

U talking about Ty.. I know his family and was really good friends with 1 of his aunts.. I tried to get myself together enough to go to the prayers but I can't do that yet.. I just keep thinking, their nightmare is just starting, and thats so hard.. I don't understand all these boys - one of my best friends - friend - her son just committed suicide.. I will say tho - all ages of people are committing suicide, and not just over a breakup these days.. and if there are people who are reaching out to people before they do this - PLEASE tell someone so people and the family can get them help. Do not - do nothing.. The family suffers this loss for the rest of their lives, while everyone else forgets them.. the family never forgets.. and if they reach out to you and are telling you they are thinking of committing suicide.. PLEASE tell someone.. we never had that option and its very hard to deal with.. I cry at least once a day for my brother and think about him constantly.. There is nothing I wouldn't give to have him back..
