Another out-of-state registration question

I think this one has a twist

In 1987, when I was living in Massachusetts, I bought a derelict 1971 MGB. I drove it up there for many summers, storing it for winters. In autumn 1999 I put the car in a barn and just kind of left it there till the owner of that barn sold the property and told me to get my POS out of there and do something, anything, with it.

So I brought the car back to MD in 2011 and fiddled a little with getting it roadworthy. It needed some brake work, clutch hydraulics, etc etc. It was a challenge, and I kinda foisted it on my dad to work his magic.

But it runs now! And goes and stops and steers! So now it's time to plate it and enjoy it until the next catastrophic failure, after which I'll push it into the Potomac and go back to driving Miatas like smart people do these days.

Anyway the car was last registered in 1999, in another state. I think (think!) I have the title, although the rules in Mass. when I bought it did not require getting a title for cars as old as mine was.

So what kind of hoops is our fine state going to make me jump through to get this clunker legal?

Not really sure, but check the Maryland DMV site before you go down there and have to deal with those folks. One of the first things they'll probably ask you is, "Does it have a current MD inspection?" Or something like that.
Oh, make sure to remember your check book. You're gonna need it.

I have had good luck asking questions like this via email to DMV officials. Then I had a hardcopy of the answer when I went to do my paperwork. Made life easier.

As far as a title goes, and I'm using an experience from 1994, if the state does not require a title, your registration alone is fine. You apply for a new MD title and transfer the registration to MD. Like I said tho, I did this coming from NY in 1994. I had no title, only a reg for 4 vehicles, and I got a new title and reg for each, no hassle at all.

But a point was made, talk with MVA first, and get an MD inspection before attempting to re-register.
