The dog breeding commmunity around here is quite large, and not a good representation of dog breeders unfortunately. i've never seen SO many people who want to make a living off dog uterus' in my LIFE  With that said, a TRUE breeder doesn't feel their "show dogs" are better - although on average they really are a better representation of their breed because their breeders took the time to research pedigrees, understand breed correct type and strive to produce it. In doing this, since dogs (usually) have large litters, there are some "left" to sell to good "pet" homes (homes where the folks don't want to show or breed but DO want well bred healthy dogs). Not every pup is "show quality" in a litter (if someone tells you so they've lost their minds, or really ARE greedy, LOL). A true breeder will breed a litter, keep the best or sell it to a home who will utilize the pedigree and type, and that dog will improve the breed as a whole. That's what breeding is all about in any species.

Breeding just to make a car payment is reprehensible. No question. And does cause many animals to be killed every year. But breeders like me, are in the minority, when they should be in the majority. SO many people simply want a healthy well bred pet, and so few really good breeders will breed a litter like this, for the reasons i stated. I breed for ME, not to meet supply and demand. It is sad that people call the whole barrel rotten for a few bad apples. :frown:

oh and FWIW, breeding IS an art, and the symantics of outcrossing, linebreeding and inbreeding have been used for many, many years to set type. TRUE breeders understand the hows, whens and whys. What we call "back yard breeders" DON'T. Period.
:yay:
Thank goodness for ethical breeders like yourself! Not all breeders are in it for the money but to keep a pure breed standards line alive so to speak. They do it out of love for the breed and if one makes it to the show ring great but they are just as happy knowing the dog they brought into the world will make a family happy with no health or behavior problems.
I had thought I wanted to do this with my old english, my male was beautiful with very good lines. For my female, the breeder I found was recommended to me from another breeder. Long story short, my male developed too much testosterone and became aggressive w/hubby during the females pre-heat. To most backyard breeders that wouldn't have mattered much, they would sold the litter to get their money back and to hell with the people who paid for them. They would have continued to breed that bad characteristic just for a dollar. My male was snipped and my female has been fixed also. Did I loose out? Oh no! I have the bestest dogs in the world.

Because she wants them to have what's best for them. Undivided attention they can get from a forever home. It's about what's in the DOG's best interest. To me that's the bottom line. Like Appy said, a breeder breeds to better what he/she has. She keeps the best to continue the breeding program, and the rest are retired or sold as pets. A caring breeder will place those dogs (who have served her well, and who she has been equally good to in return) in superior pet homes. There are lots of people who want a dog who is socialized, house broken, and basically "is what it is going to be". Many times an older couple doesn't want a puppy who they have to house break, and leash train. Nor do they want to teach it what "let's GO!" means. These retired show/breeding dogs are most often SUPERB pets in those situations.

With that said, there are breeders who ARE "dumping" dogs who are of no use for what ever reason. And these dogs may have been kennel dogs, who have never seen the inside of a house. THAT is reprehensible to breed dogs that way in the first place.

But, it seems as though the breeder you bashed was placing her valued show dogs, who have been shown, socialized and treated like royalty. At least it sounds that way to me. She should be (in my opinion) applauded for having the absolute best interest of the dogs at heart. Like i said before, someone will be VERY lucky to get one of those dogs  I would take one for sure if i wanted a labbie. but i'd certainly ask questions like, have they been in the house? are they house trained? crate trained? social? stuff like that. those questions will tell you what you need to know. If the answer is yes to all the above...then THAT is a terrific find indeed. It's not always easy onthe breeder to place those dogs. I had to place a female AKC champion (who finished in just a few shows!!) who was injured in one hip and didn't pass OFA just because of one joint. Her other hip was OFA excellent, and both elbows were beautiful. Talk about a crying woman. This girl was my heart dog. BUT i couldn't add her to my breeding program, and i wanted her to have the life she deserved. I know what my personal limits are regarding giving quality care to my animals, and she deserved more than i could give her in terms of time invested. I placed her at just over two, and her family absolutely adores her. That makes it all worthwhile. I have YET to breed another girl as wonderful as she is, in conformation and temperament. Another one may never come my way. :frown:
