STAY AWAY FROM SUGAR-FREE CANDY OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT CONTAINS MALTITOL

I had a small handful of Jelly Belly sugar-free jellybeans last night - maybe 15 or 20 of them - and I thought I was going to die. Literally, I thought I was going to die. I've never had stomach cramps like that in my whole entire life. Did I mention that I thought I was going to die?

Maltitol has had that effect on me in the past but for some stupid reason I thought the big huge SPLENDA! logo on the front of the JB package meant they were sweetened with Splenda. No. They are sweetened with maltitol and it says so right in the tiny little ingredients list.

The package says that eating an excessive amount may have a laxative effect. Who knew that a small handful of jelly beans would be considered "excessive"? And "may" have a "laxative effect"??? I will not go into detail but suffice to say I threw the rest of the package in the trash and will NEVER!!!! eat anything with maltitol in it again.

This is what I get for eating chemicals instead of real food.

wow Thanks for the heads up. I was thinking about buying some sugar free snacks too (not a norm here) but your post got me to doing some research first. This is what I found:

Sugar alcohols:
Xylitol- Occurs in fruit, veggies, mushrooms, and algae.
Erythritol- Industrially produced through aerobic fermentation of yeast.
Lactitol- Does not occur in nature.
Maltitol-Does not occur in nature.

Isomalt- Mixture of two disaccharide alcohols.

Side Effects Of Maltitol Syrup | LIVESTRONG.COM

Bloating or Flatulence
The most common side effect associated with consuming maltitol syrup is bloating or excessive flatulence, according to a 2003 study published in the "European Journal of Clinical Nutrition." Excessive abdominal bloating may cause clothing to feel unusually tight around your midsection. In addition, frequent flatulence is embarrassing, as it may give off an unpleasant odor. These side effects are temporary and usually subside within a day or two after you consume maltitol syrup. If bloating or flatulence becomes bothersome, seek additional care from your doctor.

Nausea and Appetite Loss
Stomach irritation caused by maltitol syrup may also lead to nausea or appetite loss. Nausea may also reduce your desire to participate in your usual physical activities, such as jogging or going to the gym.

Diarrhea
You may experience urgent, loose bowel movements after consuming maltitol syrup. Diarrhea is uncomfortable and may exacerbate nausea, appetite loss or bloating. Seek care from your doctor if diarrhea continues for more than a few days. Chronic bouts of diarrhea may result in the loss of fluid and electrolytes, which can increase your risk of becoming dehydrated.

Abdominal Pain
Eating maltitol syrup may also result in abdominal pain. Abdominal discomfort is usually accompanied by diarrhea or nausea. If abdominal pain is severe or persistent, contact your medical provider for further evaluation.

That sounds really good, but where is it grilled?

Outstanding question. No clue why it reads grilled. Unless it's the recipe after I tweaked it and failed to tweak the name?

Um..ignore the word "grilled"

I tweak all my recipes and create new recipes all the time. I never proof read my recipes..I don't normally share them. :blushes:

I bowl overhand
But my favorite recipe came from Longhorn.. their Bleu Ridge Salad. Half a Romaine (is it head or heart? ) sliced tomato (watch the tomatoes they have carbs) sliced cucumbers, handful of crumbled bacon, bleu cheese crumbles and bleu cheese dressing... YUMMY!

I started almost a month ago and I've lost 16 pounds so far. I try to stay between 15 to 25 grams a day. I've done WW, Nutrisystem, etc before but low-carbing is the only thing I can stick to for any length of time. I lost 58 pounds last time I did this, then my mom passed away and I drowned my sorrows in food. Anyway, I'm back on the low carb bandwagon and lovin it so far.

My worst downfall has always been late night eating. So now, late night snacking is barbeque pork rinds or deviled eggs.

Walking my dog more often helps too! :dye:

I am an enormous fan of the wedge salad, even when it's done with romaine. DID YOU KNOW that grilled romaine is THE DIG and I eat it almost every day during the summer? Cut it in half, brush with olive oil, grill until slightly charred, then have your way with it. Bliss.

Well, wait a minute. You could certainly grill the chicken, then chop it up. That would cut a calorie or two and make your "grilled" accurate, and it would still be delicious.

Just stay away from artificially sweetened stuff altogether. It's so bad for you - instead, just portion out some real stuff into serving sizes (so you don't go all happy and eat too much of it) and have it when you really need a sweet.

I've noticed that I've built up a sensitivity to ANY artificial sweetener. Even a stick of gum will give me problems. A serving of crystal lite will screw up my digestive system for about 3 days; some of the sweeteners will give me headaches, cramps, cause me to slur my words - it's all very scary. And the thing is, diet foods/drinks/goodies do not help with weight loss.

I agree - these are definitely chemicals that no one needs!

I've done it before with a lot of success - I fell off the wagon when I had jury duty and got stuck there for a week with no way to keep to a schedule/routine - and they were ordering us pizzas. I want to start again, but I just dont seem to be able to take the first step!

this is what I get for not reading every one of your posts. i let my guard down and miss one and now I sit awaiting the sugar free jelly belly ass explosion.

Should I leave not and rush to get home in time? Will I have time?

Funny, years and years ago had a buddy who was into nutrition long before the Atkins diet.
He told me a very very long time ago, if you want to lose weight, don't eat anything white. What are we talking about here, bread, noodles, rice, potatoes. I think my buddy was actually the founder of the Atkins diet, but didn't have the credentials.

By virtue of diabeetus, I am required to abide a strict low carb diet.

And let me tell you what a fine piece of ass I get to admire in the mirror every day!

You know that's right.
