Any Suggestions on submissive urination?

I have a 2 and 1/2 year old male miniature dachshund. He's been displaying submissive urination for about the last year and I've tried everything and was wondering if anyone else has been through this and how they have dealt with it.

I've taken him to the vet about it and they kept telling me that he would outgrow it but he hasn't. As a last resort we have been using "doggy Prozac" and while it seems to work sometimes, it's not a consistant fix.

The worst it's been was the time I took him to PetSmart and had him in the cart and he was standing up with his little paws on the edge of the cart. A lady had come up to pet him (cause he looked really cute) and he peed through the cart and all over her. Needless to say I was mortified and he hasn't been back since....

Thanks!

My son's dog has the same problem. He peed on his leg in the yard. We greet the dog outside now. When I touch him, he pee's on the carpet. He hates women. He got him from the pound so I think he was abused by a woman. He cowers and pee's every time I get near him.

funny story...Unrelated to the problem at hand but deals with a dog and urinating....anyway

Hubby and I take our very large Greyhounds to the beach for a walk. I run into a friend and we start talking. About five minutes later one of our dogs walked over to my husband, cocked his leg and peed on my hubbies leg in front of everyone. I laughd so hard that I fell to the sand. My husband did not think it was funny.

That IS funny! I've tried the diaper and the belly band. It's just such a pain. Plus, there is obviously some kind of anxiety going on. I've had him since he was about 10wks so I know his history plus he started doing it after we had a tragedy in the family. Any other suggestions?

Interesting-my sis has a Dachshund that does this too-she found by not looking at him-avoiding any eye contact, not bending over to greet him, and in general ignoring him for the first few minutes when she gets home-works. She also has eliminated the high pitch talk and greeting :yahoo: she use to do. She will try some quiet words to acknowledge him and slowly pet or touch him. The pup (2 yrs old) has come a long way-I do the same thing when I visit-seems to work!

I just found this on another forum
"I also have owned 3 mini doxies (LH). I agree that this sounds like submissive urination. One of my males still does this if I pay too much attention to him when I say goodbye before I go to work. My other male flops on his back to show submission. At first, I thought these two rescue dogs had been abused in their former homes, but others tell me that is not necessarily the case. It's just part of establishing/respecting the 'pecking order.'

Like Cesar Millan says, "No touch, no talk, no eye contact, no affection" until she settles down. Good luck- This is a great breed! "

and it seems to say the same thing..

That reminds me of a funny story....

Once, when a friend and I snuck out of the house at night when we were in middle school this car came past us. Incase it was a cop, we hid behind a car. This dog came up and lifted his leg on her. I just about died. She couldn't move because it was at the exact moment the car went by and it was a cop. Good times.

It’s the breed. We have one and he did all the time. More when he got excited, rather then being submissive. The only bits of advice are purchase a steam cleaner and give it time. Our dog doesn’t do it anymore, well maybe once in the last year or so.
He's about 5 yrs old now and has calmed down a lot. Neutering him is 50/50. Nothing changed when we had ours done.

Our dog barks uncontrollably... We bought him a muzzle, and when ever he starts, especially when we have company over, we put it on and he shuts up. We also noticed his peeing changed when we started to use it. Coincidence maybe, but it works

Thanks for all the great ideas. I'm going to try the ignoring thing, it's just so hard when he just so cute you wanna just grab him and hold him!!

Oh yeah, if he's a pure breed with papers, dont cut his nuts off. You can stud him out and make some moolaa.... We missed out on a great opportunity last summer. Im still kicking my wife in the butt for that one :ohwell:
