Anyone here missing a gallbladder?

Mine was a piece of cake even though I had let it go too long and it became an emergency..
15 stones a blockage and an infection in my liver... I was so jaundiced, I broke down and cried when I saw how my color came back after the surgery... Three tiny scars..
I don't think you have a think to worry about...Best wishes.

Hey - had my gallbladder out last March. Took them FOREVER to diagnose it though. Anyway - recovery time is based on how it will be removed. I recommended a "Lap" aka Laparoscopic removal. It's four to five small incisions into the abdomen. Recovery is about one week, or maybe two, it depends on how fit you were to begin with. If it's an "Open" removal then it's about a 3 to 4 inch incision and plan on at least 2 weeks recovery. And no - you won't be able to have your cheeseburger and fries for at least one week (I tried one about one week later and promptly lost it!). But every "body" is different. Also recommend getting a waist support band of some sort - you'll need it cause your stomach muscles will be VERY sore either way. Good Luck!
Really? They went after mine via laparoscopic removal, it burst when they hit it as it was gangrenous and then the emergency open removal with a 9 inch incision just below the rib cage. Closed with 16 staples, 7 day in-hospital stay (4 unconscious), and once home it was supposed to be 6 to 8 weeks before returning to work, but by week 4 I was going batty and went back on a limited basis. Week 5 I was back working full time.

Ehesef,

One thing of importance is that if you even think you need to use the restroom get there, don't fool around or only think it is gas as your body is processing food a lot differently. This holds true today almost three years later, but I can eat whatever I want or did prior to the removal. I was back on a regular diet at about week three.

My gall bladder was removed laproscopically (sp?). I have three small scars. The recovery time was about two weeks. The stomach muscles being very very sore gave me the most trouble. If you put a pillow on your stomach and hold it tight, that will help if you when you are getting out of bed or a chair. It's also real handy when you cough or sneeze. The surgery is worth it, though. Before long you will be able to eat all the foods that you've been avoiding lately. Remember to take it easy and don't push yourself. Good luck!

I had mine taken out about a year ago. The recovery was a few days but I was also 20 weeks pregnant at the time so I'm sure that made it take a bit longer. As for the whole food thing, I was told that it didn't need to be completely taken out of my diet (fried foods and such) but to eat it in moderation. Guess it would all depend on why they are removing it to begin with. Hope this helps.

What's the normal recovery time? How much pain? Can I go back to eating cheeseburgers and fries after this? Somebody give me the skinny....

Oh yeah, when they did the sonogram to find the gallstone, they found a kidney stone too...It's not causing pain yet, I'm hoping they'll do something about it before it comes to that...

The friend of mine that had it removed.. they went in laproscopically to remove the stone(s), when they saw it they decided the whole gall bladder had to go, they made a sizeable incision to remove the whole thing, and that's where the 6 - 8 inch scar came from.

Thanks everyone for the info. My consultation with the surgeon is today, wish me luck!
So...I have a laparoscopic booked on the 27th, with possible open surgery depending on how things look...I'm not too worried, I got a really good feeling from my surgeon...

::: I just wrote the following, before I noticed the dates on the thread, and before I read the last post... I guess some of the following is irrelevant, but I'll leave it here anyway:

Did you try the Olive Oil + Citrus Juice home remedy before opting for surgery? I'm not sure how reliable that is, but I know two or three people who swear that they had gallstones, but have no problems after trying that concoction. Check the web on that, maybe.

I've also heard varying results on people who've had the gallbladders removed. I've heard of people who've lost weight, people who've gained, people who like big-macs just as much as before, and people who swear that even the smell of anything greasy makes them sick.

I wish I could tell you something more definitive than that.

I've heard that the pain associated with passing a kidney stone is along the same lines as labor. I know they can break them into dust-sized particles with some sort of ultrasonic device, but I don't know the details.

Ask your doctor about that.

And Good luck to you. Let's hope your body doesn't betray you again for a while after this.
