Anyone know anybody looking for a new horse?

Unosmom- I know I have to put my paint on straight oats. I put a handful of sweet in there for taste. On sweet she is the devil incarnate! I had run out of oats one weekend this spring and gave her some sweet for breakfast. HA! my normally sweet calm mare was charging the fence when the riders came by. She would go to the opposite end of the field and flat charge the fence, bouncing to a stop! Scared the other horses. Then later, some beagles showed up and after we pet them, they decided to short cut across the pasture. We heard all this yelping and ran around the corner and Sugar had the puppies pinned in the middle of the field trying to stamp on them!!!! They were running in circles dodging!!!! We rescued them and swore we would NEVER give sugar sweet again. And you know, we havn't seen that behavior since. I almost got rid of her at one point because I didn't make the feed connection early on and she was impossible to handle. I really believe the sweet feed doesn't sit well with some horses.

Appy- What a gorgeous horse! Your care really shows. Thank you for the suggestions. I will try that. I went to the alpaca show at PGEC this weekend. My mom really wants one, but they were WAY expensive. I think she kinda changed her mind. Do you keep yours seperate from the horses?

Hmmm. Good point Appy. I didn't think about that. I do give her a hand full of sweet and fill the rest of the cup with oats. All together she only getts a soda can's worth. She is a super easy keeper. I mainly wanted her to know that in the bucket is something sweet. I have seen horses be a bear to catch if they get out of the pasture. If they know what a bucket is for, they are easier to catch in an emergency. I call them in at night with a bucket with a hand full of grain in it to shake. that is on the rare occaisons they aren't stamping immpatiently at the door.

Arabian:
I know what you mean with the "Devil" coming out! Since we started cutting Uno's sweet feed to just 1/2 a scoop this week (next week it will be only a small handfull) I see a difference. She didn't dance around yesterday when I went to saddle her or mount. Usually I have to have some-one hold her while I mount, but we went out on an 1 1/2 hour trail ride and she did WONDERFUL!!!!! Only spooked once on a deer but didn't take off just side stepped and few steps. Nothing real major. My first Arabian would take off like a bat out of you know where, and he was 25 years old.

Glad to hear that your Paint is working out though! Good Luck with the food issue.

Appy!

Very impressed with the tail! I fully understand why you tie it up! Has that impressed many judges? If not it should!!!!
Thanks for the info on what you are using. Uno's tail is still coming back. It's thick but short. I was thinking of using conditioner on it but I think it's gotten to cold. Hopefully her tail will catch back up to match her mane.

You should be very proud of him, he is impressive all on his own.
Lots of Luck to you! I hope that you finish high enough.
Is he a Gelding or ALL BOY? If you finish in the top 10 then your stud fees will more than pay for anything that you might need for him or anyone else for that matter.
We will keep our fingers, toes, and legs crossed for you!

You are welcome!
Too bad about the plumbing, though. He would have made some pretty babies!
Just keep doing what you are doing and I think someday soon he will be a champion for you!
When are your girls Due? Both Apps?

Update on Uno: She is starting to calm down as the sweet feed goes. Not quite as "strung out", but still all Arabian!!!! She most definetly has her momments. Having a concern about her weight right now. She seems to be loosing it and not gaining it. Hard to tell with her winter coat coming in. But she seems "hollow" in the hips. The muscle tone is good though. Daily riding and exercise seem to be working well. She no longer "pops" or "creaks" when she walks, and her left hip is no longer being turned to the outside like it was before. Hopefully as we get to all pellet she will gain weight. I know that the last place she will get it is in the hips, but I am a worried Mom!

Don't apoligize Appy. All help is appreciated. Uno had $600 worth of dentistry in February. She had 2 cracked teeth extracted (I had a cracked tooth last year and even my little tooth was excruciating). Her lower teeth had grown into her upper jaw and abcessed her jaw, same with the upper teeth. Major work. She actually lost weight in March, during recovery. I fed her hot mash from December to the end of March, when she finally started chewing again. It was like she had to learn to chew. I gave her 2.5 coffee cans of feed. The med cans. She really started gaining when I added the oil and weight builder. I just think it will be a slow process. I will write more later. I am in class

Unosmom, is Uno on pasture? If not, she needs more hay. Horses should be fed 1.5-2% of their body weight each day, and 1-1.5% of that should be a good quality hay. Don't get alfalfa, she doesn't need the extra protein. But a good quality grass hay should be fine. You may still want to give her more hay if she is on pasture, because most pastures are going dormant now. We have a hard keeper (TB mare...ugh) and we've tried everything with her. She was on Weight Builder, but that doesn't work very well, so we switched to corn oil. She's getting 2/3 cup 2X day. She is also on Pennfield feed called Fibergized. It's a high fat/high fiber feed. She gets fed 3X day because she'll colic if you give her too much at once. She used to have gastric ulcers, but doesn't anymore. She gets 1 3/4 coffee cans (small ones, about 2 lbs each) 3X day. She also gets 4 good sized flakes of hay 2 X day. She's not on pasture. She is slowly gaining right now. I would recommend feeding a high fat diet. Horses actually digest fat really well. I would only give her a 10 or 12% protein since she's not being worked really hard. The hoof problem you mentioned before....sounds like laminitis. Is she lame at all?

Appy: I am not mad at you! Thanks for the info. She is digesting alright though. I check her daily. Christ I am begining to think that I live at the barn. But that's my happy place. I am glad I have her too! She has done more for me than anyone could ever know!

Arabian: I am feeding her 2 times a day with 2 scoops, it works out to be about 4 lbs 2 times a day. Maybe I will switch her to 3 times a day and only give her the Corn Oil (which she gets 1/4 cup 2 times a day) with that. Thanks for giving me Uno! She is such a Gem! Call me when you get a chance.

Cowgirl:
The foot thing is exactly that. She had an absess on her left foot, which grew out and the farrier cut most of it out. She is not lame though. Moves well for an "Old Fart". As for the Hay thing. Most Arabs hate Timothy, too bitter for them. But being that is all we have, didn't get any orchard grass this year, she is tollerating it. She gets 2 big squares at night. Her Pasture is shared with 4 other horses, all but 1 of whom is 3 or younger, There is still plenty of grass, and dry leaves that I've seen them all munchn' on. I will talk with the owner of the place and see about putting some hay out though. My place is't ready for her just yet.
