Anyone know anything about appliances?

I have a GE Spacemaker microwave. It's 5 years old. There is a problem in the start switch. The exhaust fan doesn't always engage when I start it up, but pushing the button again usually solves the problem, but it's getting worse. It's still cooking, the light still comes on. I haven't let it run without the fan because I'm afraid of it overheating.

My questions are:
Is this an easy fix that I might be able to handle myself?
Is it worth the cost of fixing it? It's installed, so either someone would have to come out to the house or we'd have to uninstall it ourselves and take it somewhere.

My last (countertop) microwave lasted over 10 years... we gave it away when we got this one and for all I know it could still be going strong. It was also a GE.

Likely cheaper to just replace the unit but that again depends what the unit originally cost you. Our's was an over stove config that lasted about 10 years and when it finally went south I forked out about 250 bucks to replace.

Microwaves have a number of door interlock switches to prevent operation with the door not fully closed. If (and only if) you are mechanically inclined and know how to use an Ohmmeter you can check the switches. Since yours is otherwise working properly I suspect a switch issue. One quick check would be to push on the door as you turn it on and see if the fan comes on. Occasionally a switch will go bad and you may see evidence of overheating which makes for an intermittent connection.

Do NOT remove the cover unless the unit is unplugged!!!!!! And do NOT operate it without the cover in place.

I've seen lots of repair info for problems with door safety switches. My problem has nothing whatsoever to do with the door, it's the button that says "start" on it that is the problem. That one button is not working the way it's supposed to.

Ok, just tried to help. But, that said, a door switch (interlock) can cause your exact problem, seen it before. But I won't bother you with details. Also is your start button SPDT or DPDT, mechanical or touch film? Integrated or mechanically mounted to the CCA? Signed: Maytag Repairman

It's not the button. The botton is obviously working if the microwave starts when you push it. More likely a dirty or faulty fan.

It's touch film I'd guess would be the term. Just like the microwave below.
