Sorry to thread hijack but I have but a simple question. Is it illegal to cut down dogwood trees? I have a ton of them. I mean several. B says he recalls hearing that it was illegal to cut them down because they're endangered or threatened or something. I like a few of them but a couple of them need to go.
I think it's the Md state tree, but if they're dead.....

The Maryland state tree is a White Oak. :lmao:

The NC state flower is a flowering dogwood. Explain to me how our flower happens to be a tree. :lmao:

What information? Its "endangered" status? I'd be surprised if they are endangered, considering they are all over the place down here, and they sell them at Lowes. :lmao:

Popular legend has it that wood from the dogwood was used to construct the cross on which Christ was crucified. God had pity upon the tree, giving it white flowers similar to the cross. The reddish center of each flower symbolizes the blood of Christ. God transformed the once towering tree into one that is small with twisted, gnarled trunks so they could never be used for the purpose of building a cross again.

Maybe you shouldn't cut them down. :jameo:

Two questions for experienced gardeners out there-

My aunt uses Epsom salts sprinkled on the ground around her plants as a bug deterrant. Does this work, and if so, does it effect the soil?

Also,

I read that when you plant apple trees, you shouldn't put fertilizer in the hole before you put the tree in because it burns the roots. Is this true, and what time of year is best to plant them?

Thanks!

No, it doesn't harm the soil but I've never heard of it being used to deter bugs. It's normally used as a fertilizer as it is a mixture of magnesium sulfate and sulfur that helps plants produce chlorophyll. Quite a few use it to help roses and other flowers bloom.

Fall is the best time to plant trees. I always mix fertilizer in with the soil when I plant trees, including apples. Just don't use fresh manure or one with a lot of nitrogen as that WILL burn the roots. Fertilizer with numbers like 10-10-10 or 5-10-10 (the numbers correspond to the amount of nitrogen, phosphate, and potash respectively as a percentage of the fertilizer) are fine to use. Or use a time-released fertilizer with the same numbers that gradually adds nutrients to the soil.
