"WASHINGTON (AP) — Soldiers strained by six years at war are deserting their posts at the highest rate since 1980, with the number of Army deserters this year showing an 80% increase since the United States invaded Iraq in 2003.

While the totals are still far lower than they were during the Vietnam War, when the draft was in effect, they show a steady increase over the past four years and a 42% jump since last year."

 I can not speak for the thread starter that Pete's question is directed at,

but I say from my perspective that it is a nice thought that those deserters have finally seen the light of not pushing injustice and of not serving a corrupt master,

so on that thought I would certainly say that I am a friend to all of the deserters even though they do not know me.

At least they are trying to do the right thing.

If only our USA military leadership would defy the immorality of our war criminal President - then we would see a blessed improvement.

If they made the commitment, they should serve their time. If they were so afraid they could have easily not joined.

Similar to having a child... once it's happened you can't just run out.

Say, Jimmy, since you are so familiar with being weak and a coward, do you think you would be able to abandon your HoR seat when the heat gets too high? Why should anyone vote for a person with a history of being a deserter and supporting other deserters, as you have?

I honestly do have to ask why you would run for a political office for a country whose ideals you do not support?

I'm glad you're consistant in believing that breaking the law is ok.

You sign a contract, you serve that contract, or you go to jail. During wartime, that can be a long time.

 I do like the ideas of the USA.

The point is that President Bush is violating the ideas of the USA.

I want the USA to get back to morality and back to doing right.

The war mongering of this Bush administration is not the American way.

The torture of prisoners was not the American way until the criminal Bush made the USA sink that low.

Having American soldiers to keep fighting an immoral occupation in servitude of our immoral President is not the American way either.

Land of the free and home of the brave is the American ideal that I support.

I run for political office to improve the USA and not to help in its wrong doings. :patriot:

Honoring your contract, your oath and your service is morality and doing right. If that's what you want, then you would not be friends of deserters.

My father, three brothers-in-law and two sons-in-law have all served in the military and none of them have deserted. You take the oath and you keep the oath. They served under a wide array of presidents and no, they didn't agree with everything those president's decided. But they still served because that was the honorable thing to do. You don't just "pick up your marbles and go home" because you don't like the way things are being done. You can - but that's not keeping your oath or your honor IMO and I would not vote for a man I did not feel has honor and keeps his word.

There is no draft - desertion is not an option. You sign up to do a job, you do it. You join the military knowing that one day you will be called upon to be in harm's way.

JPC believes if the fire is hot you get out of the kitchen. I guess the multitude of remedies to turn down the heat don't occur to him.

Hey, I'm not the least bit patriotic but I've been in 10 years so far and don't plan on going anywhere because I signed that paper and gave my oath.

 The military oath of contract for American soldiers is to serve the USA and not to blindly follows the criminal orders of our immoral President.

The soldiers, as any American citizen, or any human being, need to be in subject to their own true conscience first and foremost.

The Bible puts it best by the Apostle Peter that we must serve God rather then men, link HERE.

If our US Congress had the guts that our soldiers have then Bush and Cheney would be impeached as criminals.

No, you're wrong. The Oath of Enlistment clearly states...

"I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God. "

Cease talking about something you have no knowlege about.

:diva: So if our President orders that the so-called "terrorist" be put into gas chambers and exterminated as his final solution to the USA terrorist problem then the soldiers must do their duty and comply?

And we can not be certain what that criminal orders in his secret torture chambers because this President considers himself and our soldiers as above the laws of the Geneva Convention.

I say no. :patriot:

That is not for a soldier to decide. That is why there is Congress, The Supreme Court, and the citizens of the country.

Desertion during war is punishable by death. Hopefully you will be standing in front of one of these deserters when they get theirs... Kill 2 whiners at one time...

Prove it Jimmy-boy and quit lying or simply shut up. As far as I know the only criminal doing any talking around here is you and you falsely calling the President a criminal makes you a committer of libel. It’s bad enough that you support those, like yourself, that don’t honor their commitments that they freely and with knowledge entered into. So go on now and show me any evidence of where the President has ordered a soldier, or anyone for that matter, to torture a prisoner?

:buddies: One of many shows of evidence is link HERE.

Plus having "secret prisons" with "secret prisoners" is a crime and a form of torture in itself, and it violates the Geneva Convention.

Our President Bush is a war criminal and there is no libel to it. :patriot:

So how long have we been in Iraq??

Long enough that all these deserters have either enlisted OR re-enlisted while we were in Iraq.. Do you really think EVERYONE is as stupid as you, and they enlisted and got to their first duty station and said, "IRAQ? When did we go there?? I didn't know we were there!"

It doesn't surprise me you'd side with the criminals.

MORON!
