The Curiouser No. 16 from Symmetrical Bodies, 2023, acrylic and wax painting with image transfer on paper mounted on wood panel, 7 x 5 inches. Artwork by Sue Johnson.

Professor of Art Sue Johnson's "Symmetrical Bodies" artwork will be the solo exhibition at gallery neptune & brown in Washington, D.C. through June 14. An opening reception with the artist will be held on April 26 from 5-7 p.m. at gallery neptune & brown. The exhibition is curated by Saul Ostrow.

Ostrow comments that Johnson "through her creation of 'alternative pictorial histories' ... continues to push the limits of her modes of presentation, thus reaffirming art's role as a medium for exploring complex social issues and as a potential catalyst for cultural change."

Johnson is a multidisciplinary artist and professor who integrates installation, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, ceramics, textiles and found objects in her work. She holds an MFA from Columbia University and a BFA from Syracuse University and is currently professor and department chair in the Department of Art at St. Mary's College of Maryland, where she has taught for over 30 years. She has been awarded numerous fellowships and artist residencies worldwide. She has 15 of her works from "Hall of Portraits from The History of Machines" in COLLECTive Concerns: Collage and Assemblage, a traveling exhibition through 2026 sponsored by the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries.
