Space rock known as '16 Psyche' was discovered in 1852 by Italian astronomer Annibale de Gasparis

An asteroid that was discovered nearly 170 years ago could be worth as much as $10,000 quadrillion, experts believe.

The space rock, known as “16 Psyche,” was discovered on March 17, 1852, by Italian astronomer Annibale de Gasparis, but a newly published study notes it could be almost entirely comprised of iron and nickel. The study's lead author, Dr. Tracy Becker, estimates its worth approaching $10,000 quadrillion.

“We’ve seen meteorites that are mostly metal, but Psyche could be unique in that it might be an asteroid that is totally made of iron and nickel,” Becker said in a statement. “Earth has a metal core, a mantle and crust. It’s possible that as a Psyche protoplanet was forming, it was struck by another object in our solar system and lost its mantle and crust.”

And thats why we need to get Out There. The resources are staggering. It can lessen the burden we place upon the earth, and in doing so we place fewer of our eggs in the one big blue basket.

Maybe we can direct that asteroid to earth. Drop it somewhere we can get the minerals out of it.

If it was a proto-planet core, it may contain significant sources of heavier metals.
Oh... like this.

Just smelt it in orbit, focus some sunlight on it.......

Are we really hurting for iron and nickel?

Nope, but this stuff is already out of the gravity well,, so when you get to making things in space, it's a helluva a lot cheaper.

I think the reason this is a new story is that they have higher confidence that it's pretty pure.

A shame we can't just PLANT it in the Mars core and have it create a magnetic field to shield it from radiation.
