Depends on your definition of detailing is. The places mentioned above aren't detail shops. Their hack shops that wash and slap on a coat of wax. Detailing is claying, polishing the paint with a machine AND NOT SCREWING it up with holograms or buffer burns. After the polishing to remove swirls and scratches a wax or sealant is applied. Door jams are cleaned and waxed, vents dusted, carpets shampooed, etc.

^^^ What this guy said.

All those listed above are not detail shops. They use poor quality chemicals, equipment, ect. You get what you pay for, but coming from someone who knows the right & wrongs of Auto detailing I would stay far away from those places. A porper detail shop at a oil change facility around here? unheard of. You get what you pay for. Here is a example(Joke but also pretty true).

The Hack 'n Swirl..........................................................$90 (2 hours)

-Wheels are cleaned using a purely acidic concrete cleaner.

-Vehicle is thoroughly washed using dirty wash mitt and soapy water thats been used on at least 15 other cars.

-Vehicle is hand dried using only the cheapest and dirtiest chamois known to man. Great care is taken to ensure that these chamois are dropped in the dirt at least once.

-After this, one highly experienced crackhead will thoroughly buff your car with a 13 year old wool pad and cheap fill in glaze. Here, great care is taken to ensure that the most evenly distributed swirl pattern possible is left on every panel of your vehicle.

-Next, wax is hand applied using a moist terry-cloth towel that has recently been dropped in gravel.

-Now, your interior will be sprayed with cheap degreaser, pressure washed, towel dried, and covered in armor all to ensure maximum slickness (steering wheel, pedals, and in dash plastics are treated to extra coats).

-Seat belts will now be cleaned using ultra-strength, fiber weakening cleaner.

-Quickly, before the interior dries, silicone base tire dressing is over-applied to the tires, ensuring maximum spinoff - an especially popular option for our white car owners, and windows are cleaned with microfiber towels that have been used by gorillas.

-After baking in the sun, wax is almost completely removed using old bath towels

-Freshly destroyed car is then returned to satisfied, cheap a** customer.

I've seen both the detail that Civic & General describe and a detail such as Cheseldines will do. Park the cars next to each other and you won't tell a difference. For the money, the local boys do a fine job.

Depends on the person looking, I suppose. Many folks just dont look. Some folks might see a house that looks nice. I see drains that dont get far enough away from the house, or a lack of soffit ventilation. Some folks see a civic. I might notice its lowered just right, maybe a front mount intercooler, and a right sized exhaust, and the right suspension setup for handling. You see what you know, is what I'm saying. I've seen +$400,000 McMansions with such crappy construction I wouldnt buy them if I could. The owners? Not a clue as to why at that price range you should be getting laminated floor joists, not dimensional lumber, and glued and screwed T&G 3/4 subfloor, not nailed regualr plywood. They see nice windows, I see builder grade stuff I wouldnt put in a 1,000 square foot bungalow.

 You're talking about structural deficiencies on houses and modifications to cars.

We're talking is the car clean and shiney. The difference in cost is the point.

I'm not knocking the expensive detail because a lot of work goes into it but the end result is just not that noticeable to the normal person.

Crash in one of those guys when it comes to seeing the difference. In this regard, much more so than I. He's not the norm, but he's out there.

The flooring issue isnt a structural deficinecy, just a matter of quality, quality most folks wouldnt distinguish. You said "You wouldnt notice", I was saying that there are many folks who would. Not most, not by a long shot. But many. And you cant say someone wouldnt notice unless you knew the person involved.

You may just have an untrained eye. I'm not insulting you. The hack shops use a glaze which *fills* the scratches and swirls which erodes away after a few washes. Like you said, for the money, if your satisfied with what they do then so be it. But these shops are not true detail shops. A good detailer that performs what myself and civic described are virtually unheard of in this area. I detail but for only for close friends and family and special requests. For a mid size SUV for a proper detail, my price starts out at $250 to make the paint flawless. Depending on the condition of the paint, it will take 8-10 hours to complete.

General Lee hit the nail on the head. These "detail shops" don't correct the paint, they just temporally make it looks better. There are a lot of ppl who are very uneducated when it comes to detailing vehicles. Most of these shops don't even clean the barrel of the wheels, barley clean the wheel wells/tires, won't clean the door jams or behind the glass lid. I could go on & on. I guess it really comes down to what your looking for. If u want to spend $50 than that's what you get. I guarantee if you put a car that they detailed next to one that I detailed your average person would be able to tell. But its rare around here to see a vehicle like that around here. Let alone someone who does that kind of work.
