Auto registration:transferring from one state, to Md.

Looks like I'm actually gonna have to quit ducking the system and transfer two vehicles, at least the registration to Md.

Question is, how difficult is this to do for a vehicle that is not legal and will not be driven on the street (ie. my jeep). Is there a requirement for inspection prior to registration?? I need to keep the registration updated and legal, so that I can take it 4 wheeling at the public offroad parks.

TIA

I do not believe the MD allows a vehicle to be registered without tags and insurance. To get those you need a vehicle inspection. Plus I think you need to pay sales tax (5%) of the blue book value of your car.

I know when my dad, who lives out of state, gave me his car, even with a notarized document that it was a gift I still had to pay the tax on the blue book value. The only way I could avoid that is if the vehicle had been titled in the state and then given to me as a gift by a relative.

This site explains it better MVA

Good Luck

You only have to pay tax if the sales tax you paid when you bought it was less than 5%. You pay the difference. You also have to pay for a title.

That only applies to certian states. I paid 7% in Hawaii and then paid 5% when I moved here.

I'm new here from out-of-state and wondering where these public offroad parks are. I'm thinking of getting an off-road vehicle - maybe a 4-wheeler or dirt bike. Also, is it possible to drive the vehicle there if it is registered?

BTW, I've heard some bad things about this MVA. Anyone have any tips about going there? It looks like they make you take a day off work just to get titling, registration and maybe license.

Thanks.

PT ..if they are already in your name and your just transferring them to MD.
I don't believe you pay any taxes on them.
I believe you only pay taxes on them if the titles change ownership.
If your Jeep is 25 years or older you can put historic tags on it and then the law doesn't requirer it to be inspected.

Also if it is altered, like a hot rod you can get Street Rod Tags, that will allow you to drive it from point A to point B .
I believe with those Tags you are also exempt of having it inspected.

Good luck at the MVA :howdy:

I've always had pretty good experiences when visiting the MVA in Waldorf. Just recently I went last Tuesday to get my tags renewed. I had a brief 15-minute delay (cleared though, once they actually checked their computer systems :biggrin) and then I was on my way.

Try to avoid Mondays and Fridays; it seems these are the busiest times. :yay:

Can't do registration in Loveville yet, but they told me they are going to start soon. They may have already. The law used to say if you've been in the state less than 30 days, you can register your vehicle without paying the state tax. I think they've since changed it to a flat tax for vehicles over a certain year. PT, all I can say is have fun with the MVA. They're always alot of laughs to get anything done. :killingme

Big problems

I've had a heck of time trying to get all the vehicle stuff squared away, what a pain... got half of my cars done, the other half is waiting on proof of my mothers cousins pet dogs maiden name...
