...just got it to replace macafee and I let them get on my computer to do it; very cool! I can't help but think it's easy to get on people's computers, but it's cool when someone who knows more than me breezes through the process.

Did it once before with quickbooks.

Is it a mistake to let them do that?

Depends on how they did it. There's a couple of ways. The safest is for you to initiate the request and send them that request, which has a timer associated with it. Once the timer expires, they're locked out.

Sounds like the way they came in just took advantage of "remote control". Being that it was a reputable company, I wouldn't be too concerned. However, if they got in, it also means your Firewalls may not be configured to to the job they should be doing in preventing such connections.

...an exe file and you initiate it. Then, when it's all done, they tell you it is un-installed.

Right now, my computer is acting like it got some steroids. All that happened, I htink, is out with macaffee and in with AVG.

I was working for Dell when they started doing remote access. For the techs that know what they're doing, it's an awesome utility. However, I've seen it go the other way pretty quickly.

I wouldn't worry about your firewall settings. They create a secure connection when they remote in. Also, they're probably communicating through a well-known port (a port that you probably already allowed in your firewall.)

In that case, you initiated the connection request over a secured channel with them. Not a problem.

I've found AVG to use minimal system resources while still doing a terrific job. No doubt the performance increase you see is due to the removal of McAfee.

Definitely out with McAfee. McAfee and Norton are the giants in the AV game. Therefore, it makes them primary targets.

AVG is excellent for home use and it's free! You can't beat that. However, if you really want protection, you'll have to go with NOD32.

cnetdownload.... :yay:

I haven't had any trouble with the free version. I was told that there isn't anything you can't for free on the web and some of that software is rediculous!!

Wow!!!! You actually bought the Internet Security package? Take it back. Seriously. All you need from AVG is antivirus. There are other free solutions that do a better job with the other stuff.

...do I get it back in the internets?

I think, when a company offers a free product and you like it, there is an obligation to actually make a purchase from them. It's what keeps them in business.

I am using AVG free and Comodo Firewall which is also free. Both are great! A certain wonderful forumite told me to use these!
