Babysitters?

How do you find a babysitter in your area? When I was in high school I watched all the neighborhood little ones and loved it! I am looking for a teen to occasionally watch our toddler in our home for occasional date nights or work functions. Any ideas on where to find one!?

Not really sure as all of mine are old enough not to need one but you might want to try putting up a notice on the community bulletin board in the Post Office.

It might be worth a shot to call Northern High or Calvert Career Center and see if they have any Child Care classes. If they do, perhaps the teachers would be willing to suggest you as a possible job opportunity for any teens who are pursuing child care or elementary education careers. The worst that could happen is that the Secretary would tell you no and the best would be finding a lead on a kid that's going into it as a career.

You could also check the phone book for local Scout troops, or contact some of the local churches to see if they know of anyone. We have lots of teens around, just not sure if there's a "central clearinghouse" of these kinds of opportunities. I do believe that the local Parks & Rec or maybe the Hospital conducts a "babysitting" class for interested teens. You might want to consider contacting them also. (May be the best place to start because I think they do CPR training as part of this.)

Hope this helps a little bit!

And these folks had an ad at the top of the page when I posted to you so, just for fun, I searched on our zip code.

Sitter Search

Where was this kind of stuff when I needed a sitter years ago? Sheesh!

Good luck!

HaHa! Have you seen the PRICES for parents just to find a sitter on those sites!? It's outrageous! It's free for the sitters, but the parents pay! I'm all for finding top notch, fun, reliable, trustworthy sitters but geesh, if I'm paying $40/month to FIND a sitter, that doesn't leave much room to pay those sitters and have date nights and the like! LOL! I guess what I'm thinking/saying is when I was a younger teen, I just got word of mouth jobs and never had any fancy parents "buying" me off a website. lol!

I emailed the Child Development teacher at Huntingtown High, but with privacy laws and whatnot, I thought it would probably be a far stretch. I will try the hospital or parks and rec tomorrow! Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm really surprised no one on here has a daughter/grand daughter/daughter's friend/niece/etc that babysits!? Lol!

Sorry, I didn't spend too much time looking at the website before I posted the link. I used to babysit when I was a teen, too!

I'm sorry that I don't have any kids in the age group you'd be looking at -- my youngest is 13 & the next one is 19 & away at college, so I don't even have "friend of a friend" to be able to refer you to. If I do hear of anyone, I'll send you a PM but I think the safe babysitting class thing is probably your best option at this point. That and the old notice up at the post office which is actually surprisingly effective here as everyone goes there to get mail. If you want to get the "word" out, that's the place!

Noooooooooo, no need to be sorry at all! I was half joking about it, half laughing because I had looked at all of those sites, and in sticker shock! LOL.

It's okay! Thanks so much for reading, posting, and for the hints! I was actually at the NB Post Office today and was checking the board in hopes that someone would have a little thing posted...I'll post one tomorrow then :) Hopefully my two year old doesn't enjoy the "echoing" room as much this time...lol...THANKS for the 0.02, I didn't realize the post office was "the place" for these things!

THANKS!:yahoo:

Nope. I don't trust any stranger...but how is someone on this ad any LESS strange than someone replying from my ad posted in the post office or Rolands or through a childcare site? You get references, meet the people, have recommendations from people then narrow it down...just saying:confused:

We are friends with the parents of both our of our kids babysitters. One lives on my street and its so convenient.. the other lives about 12 miles away... not as convenient because she has to be driven home but the worship her.. We are in Southern Calvert... so I think you would be to far away :(

Oh have you checked the classifieds on here? I remember seeing before that teens were advertising on there as babysitters.

You said work functions. Do you or your husband's co workers have a teen that would be interested? Ask around, I'd trust someone through that vice some ad. Never know who's really advertising. How about senior centers or churches? A lot of older people need work too. I hired an older lady to check on my sons (18 & 15) once a day when we had to leave for a trip (just to be sure they hadn't killed each other :) ).

We always find them through church. If the teen we prefer isn't avail, we ask her to recommend a friend (that is also in our church)

Thanks so much! Most of the sitters I'm coming across seem to be in Southern Calvert, I appreciate it though!

We did ask around. My husband is in the Navy and at a brand new squadron, most of the guys he's with are close to our age...and some of the older guys/gals he asked live in northern va. and north of base...we're one of FEW that moved south of base in calvert...most are on base or northern va.
