I hope the officer will be alright, but he must have really been hauling ass to completely flip the car. When you fall asleep at the wheel, you veer off to the side, not do a Smokey and the Bandit.
The little black box could tell us, but I bet that we'll never know..

Do hope he recovers.. no matter how bad or fast they drive, they don't deserve to suffer a lifetime for it..

My apologies to Speedy, I just read it real quick. The reason the car was there so long is because they have to do reconstruction. Anytime there is an accident where a life is either taken or has the possibility of being fatal, they have to call out a special team of officers that recreates the accident based on skid marks, damge to the vehicle, etc. It takes awhile to do all that.

What about the black truck?

I was talking to some neighbors about that truck this weekend, vrai. Their story was that when they closed the road in the inital accident, there was a second one with the truck and another vehicle. I haven't read it anywhere and can't verify it, though.

Great :ohwell:

That sounds about right - the black truck didn't make sense in conjunction with the cop car, given where everything was situated and the damage done.

Bad Accident on Rt 4 la... 06-10-2007 05:14 AM yeah, dumbass was probably going 100 mph, because cops are ALLOWED to do that! serves him right

Okay.

HOW DARE YOU! I am a close personal friend of Deputy Coates and his family. We were stationed together in Fort Sill, when he was on active duty in the Army, and they are wonderful people. I hope that one day when you need the police that they take their good old time getting to you because heaven forbid that they break the speed limit. If that is all a police officer does wrong is speed, then I would say that they are a pretty good person. I think that they have earned that right!

Anyhow, an update on his condition.........

Johnny has a slim to no chance of regaining any function of his legs ever again. He is paralyzed from his chest down, although he does have full use of his arms, so he will still be able to hold his son. I spoke with his wife yesterday, and they are hoping for his release from the hospital Saturday, from there he will go to an inpatient rehab facility for 6-8 weeks.

Please keep them in your prayers.

bohman.....

Thank you for clarifying. I was searching for articles regarding my friends accident, and when I seen that it infuriated me. Now I think I understand better.

Speedy.....my deepest apologies.

from St. Mary's Today online

Calvert Deputy Critically Injured

DUNKIRK --- A Calvert County deputy was critically injured early today when he apparently lost control of his police car, or perhaps fell asleep and went off the edge of Rt. 4 near the Dunkirk Animal Hospital at Brickhouse Road.
"The accident took place at about 4 am and we are praying for our officer," Calvert Sheriff Mike Evans told ST. MARY'S TODAY, who identified the deputy as John Coates, who has been on the department for about a year, serving prior to that as a county correctional officer.
Sheriff Evans said that Coates was off-duty and headed southbound on Rt. 4 when his vehicle left the roadway at about 4 am.
There were no passengers in the police car and there is no reason to suspect foul play of any kind, according to the Sheriff. Coates was flown to Baltimore Shock Trauma where Evans said he was getting good care but that they are very concerned about him. Coates has a five-year-old son and is married.
Next to violence from the public during domestic situations and serving warrants, most injuries to police officers occur on the highway.
Thats old news.....happened a couple of months ago.
