You know, it's sad they couldn't save him, but that poor horse with through more chit than necessary just because he was in the public spotlight. I'm sure he already went through tremendous amounts of pain and suffering just so the public would be happy. No horse wants to be cooped up for months on end with problem after problem. IMO, they should've put him down before he had to go through months of surgery after surgery and treatment after treatment.

You have to give the owners credit, they tried so hard to save him.

RIP

:frown: From the article I read last night, they sounded like they had given it all they could and this latest setback didn't give them much hope so they were resigned to having to put him to sleep. RIP Barbaro.

I seriously don't think his owners spent the enormous amounts of money on the horse just to make the public happy.

Well, I do....and I think the prospect of him being a stud was incentive for them to keep him alive. But I don't have any doubts that the public eye had at least something to do with the decisions that were made. Maybe it wasn't the only reason, but I think it was part of it.

When I first heard about Barbaro's accident, I was impressed with the horse's drive to win. I had hoped the undefeated racer would live to a ripe old age in a horse wheelchair, dispensing nuggets of wisdom to foals: "You know what makes you a champion? It's not just speed or stamina, it's the fire in your gut. When you have that fire, you own that track. Plus, once your racing days are over, you get plenty of filly action."

That poor beautiful animal. I have to say I agree with Cowgirl a little on this one. I think they should have put him down when it first happened rather then put him through months of torture. RIP big guy! :bawl:
