So you're saying he stood at stud in the middle of training for the Triple Crown? Where did you see that info?

WTOP said something last night about him mating with a mare since his accident. I can't find it though.

If so that would make him a full brother/sister.

That's what the article says. They have a yearling that's a full brother and then another full sib on the way.

I'm sure that poor ole mare will be bred till she drops now, while they hope to get another Barbaro. I never read about who raised him. Thanks for posting the article.

Novelist Jane Smiley wrote a strange and wonderful book a couple of years ago called "A Year at the Races," in which she explained, with an articulacy missing here, that the human engagement with horses is nothing less than a love story. If you were wondering why the death of Barbaro hurts some so, there is the answer:

"A love story, at least a convincing one, requires three elements: the lover, the beloved, and the adventures they have together," Smiley wrote. "If the lover isn't ardent, then the story isn't a love story. If the beloved isn't appealing, then the lover just seems idiosyncratic or even crazy; and if they have no adventures, then their love is too easy, and they have no way of learning anything important about themselves and one another."

This is why I think cloning will not work for performance horses. You can have full siblings who don't perform equally as well as one spectacular horse. There is so much that goes into a horses training, experiences, heart etc that you just can't duplicate it - only his genes can be copied. Maybe that is where a "soul" comes into play? Charmagne James has cloned a foal from her 30 yr old Super barrel horse, Scamper. She has over $150,000 in it so far and it's only a baby. It will be interesting to see if she uses him for barrel racing or only for breeding.

Thank You Lilypad for all the effort you put into keeping all of us updated on Barbaro condition. :huggy:
I watched World News last night and cried as his Dr gave his editiorial. None of us knew Barbaro but it was pretty gut wrenching listening to Dr. Richardson as he spoke about Barbaro's last night and how he looked at him and saw the discomfort he was in. He spoke of how he had told the Jackson's that he would do everything he could but that if he ever saw that Barbaro was suffering that he would not let him go on. He said that Sunday night he did not sleep and that he had that concerned look in his eye. :bawl: Have any of you ever had a horse that was in pain and you could see it and you knew you had to make "that decision" ?? If so you would know what he was talking about. I myself have had that experience so for me, this breaks my heart and brings back some sad moments. I myself was hoping above all hope that this magnificent horse would overcome this. I don't know his owners so I will not make judgement as to why they were holding onto him so desperately. Could it just be that they knew him and loved him and that it did not just mean $$$$$$ ? After all they made plenty of money off of him and I am sure he was insured for an astronomical amount of money.
You know it's not always about the money......RIP Barbaro :flowers:

The sadness never really goes away, does it. When I recently lost my little mare, she was at New Bolton and shared the stall over from Barbaro, I told the Doc to ask Barbaro to rub some luck off on her. He seemed to be defying all odds. The following day we all knew Belle was ready to go. That decision is so hard to make but when they know it's time, they let you know. RIP Belle. RIP Barbaro. :huggy:

With an emptiness inside me
I abandoned precious hope
Never dreaming for a moment
What I needed was a rope

When in darkness and depression
Every step became a falter
Never thinking for a minute
That my light would be a halter

And with every painful heartbeat
Countless memories to stain
Never planning in advance
Joys returning with a rein

Never, never to imagine
That a life so deeply scarred
Might find love's true, tender healing
Mucking out the horse's yard

Though I've never been a doctor
With assurance I prescribe
For the broken hearted lonely
Take this cure that I describe

When you're feeling down and desperate
Taken liberally of course
Fill your life with blessed pleasure
Saddle up and ride your horse

RIP Barbaro

Thanks Lilypad for sharing that nice poem. :flowers:
