Basic Knowledge for all dog and cat owners + First Aid

Adopt me please !
I ended up at the vet office this AM when they opened with MaryKate (kitty) that couldn't pee. I had no idea how long she may have had this problem, so I felt it was possibly hurting her, and could kill her if it had been days since she had peed. She felt hot also, so I assumed she had a fever. Turns out a normal range of temperature goes up to 103 degrees for a cat, hmm, if I knew that in the past, I had forgotten. Her temperature at the vet office? 103.

So, I was thinking that for my benefit, and the benefit of others, how about we dedicate a thread to learning the basics about our critters health, and also basic first aid for felines and canines. Most of us know that we need to be careful as not all products/medications can be used on both cats and dogs.

I would like for everyone to help us post useful websites, recommend book titles, and share information they have about common illnesses with their pets. The information will help us all since we can use this thread to refer back to.

We have no idea how we are going to replace the $67 spent at the vet on MaryKate (office visit plus antibiotics for a suspected UTI). That money was designated for purchasing food for the critters. I am grateful to my vet for seeing MaryKate w/o an appt. It appears that I over-reacted to MaryKate's condition, so in the future I want to make better choices about the severity of the situation since my vet assistant suggested if I thought it was urgent I could have taken her to the ER vet. Usually when I call my vet about a sick critter they give me an appt. for that same day which is great, however, I thought that MaryKate must be suffering (no she wasn't crying or showing signs of pain), and that I NEEDED to get help right away.

Here is what I see so far online: Pet Health MedicineNet.com Pet Health Center from WebMD

sigh...

I have posted most of this somewhere.... all major health issues/ER that need to be addressed STAT...

and as far as the money.... 67 bucks is nothing for a vet visit... be happy thats all it was. And YES... a UTI is important... and is a reason to get your pet into the vet asap... AS IT is painful and cause stress to the animal.

just think of how uncomfortable and painful it is when you/we as humans get a UTI... Cant say its fun or enjoyable... or something i would like to put off going to the dr for.

:huggy: thanks - yes on the common health issues for cats page in the webmd link I posted, it DID say inability to urinate IS an emergency ..... so I was good to act quickly. I now know not to show up at my vet again w/o an appt. I had called and left a message last night on their VM, but I didn't wait for a call back this morning obviously. Yeah I know $67 is nothing for a vet bill.

I've had a UTI before, and it was painful for me, so I assumed it was for her also. I don't regret my quick response, but I see now I could have waited for an appt. if it was going to be today right? Although the unknown length of time she had the problem was what cause my panic.

I would have just showed up....

I took her back again to the vet on Saturday morning because after 5 doses of the RX (2 1/2 days) she was still hanging out in the litter box. Had x-ray done and no signs of an issue. So hoping to see improvement by later today.
