A bat & a ball costs $1.10. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

5 cents

Well I read the example wrong anyway. It was X+($1+X)=$1.10, so 2X = $0.10 thus X = $0.05

Those must be 1950's prices. I remember two brothers and I worked half a day unstringing a barn of tobacco (real, flue-cured tobacco, not this Yankee burley they grow in Maryland) for $3 each, which we pooled to buy a bat and ball. Before that we used a length of 1x6 and a superball we'd found somewhere. Must have been about 1969.
