Be This Littering?

About once a week, some clown, in the middle of the night, comes down our street and throws an ad rag in everyones' front yard. For someone to throw paper in a plastic bag in my yard without my permission is littering. I called the St. Mary's County sheriff's office to report this littering. They suggested I contact to company printing this unwanted material, which I did. Do you think this had any effect? Of course not! Our county officials should prosecute these people for littering. A couple of $1,000 fines might rein them in, but I doubt it.

Same goes for those cigarette smokers that think Rte. 235 is their personal ashtray.

:yeahthat:

Stay up one night and ask the person to stop chucking the rag in your yard, it will probably work. :yay:

I took me about 5-6 calls to the Emptyprise before they quit delivering the Advertiser to my home. I started picking them up from the neighbor's driveways and then throwing them at the Emptyprise's front door. Let them pick them up for a change.

I like free fireplace starters and I thank the newspaper people for providing me with it.

 And this affects you how?

I'm a former smoker (by about 2 years); I have an intense dislike for the smell of smoke around the front doors of places like Giant, etc. Sometimes the sight of an ashtray full of butts grosses me out. But I don't complain about it - it's not worth the effort. Seems like people frequently like to take a jab at smokers just because they can.

The advertiser is in part sponsered by the county, so I don't think littering will come up, but if you keep calling and complaining on the driver they are more than likely to get fired. I delivered the advertiser for about 2 months before I quit due to reasons of the people in charge being some of the most unorganized people I have ever met, but I do know the person in charge overall (he's in waldorf) is not one to mess with. Try calling them there and let them know you don't want one.
The rule is if there is already a paper in the driveway when the driver goes by, not to throw another one, and if the house is an enterprise customer they don't get one, but then you see the houses with about 20 old papers....

I'm a drinker, but not a smoker. I will throw bottles out my car window.

Charcoal lighter fluid works great for that. I call it Kindling-in-a-can.

:yeahthat: RR posts some good posts but I'll totally disagree with him here..... put the nasty butts in your car ashtray!! And if you do it when I'm behind you on my bike, be prepared for a heated confrontation!! :howdy:

Give 'em a break. You're going to live longer than them...isn't that enough for you? :smooch: Try taking a trip on I-95 during rush hour or after a hold up- there are cigs everywhere. I guess it is a combo of the time spent traveling and the stress.

As for those papers....

If I called and asked the company printing them to stop delivering then and they refused, I'd get a little annoyed, too. I don't see why it wouldn't qualify as littering. Is there a law that, like the national "do not call list", allows you to not be harassed through paper mail? One good solution to this problem is to wait until this clown comes by in the morning, and when they throw the paper at you, jump out from behind a tree, bush, etc. in a large gorilla suit and catch it and throw it back at them. Repeat until they stop delivering the papers. :yay:

Call SOMD Advertiser - 301 645-8945. I called four times before it actually stopped for good. I haven't received one since last July. I told them most in the neighborhood were still there days later and it was trashing up the neighborhood. I have an Enterprise paperbox, too, so that didn't dissuade them at all. Keep track of when you call, so each time you have to call, you can give them your history. On my final call, I left a message and told them it was my fourth call and if it wasn't stopped, I would take further action to insure it was. They must have listened, because once I saw the delivery car toss one in my yard, then back up and retrieve it, and then continue with the deliveries. Good luck.

While I agree that this is annoying as hell, and would p!ss me off a lot, I am not sure if the material being left would actually be classified as litter. The definition under Maryland code for litter is - "Litter" means all rubbish, waste matter, refuse, garbage, trash, debris, dead animals, or other discarded materials of every kind and description. Since this is an advertisement that is being given to you for your use (even if unsolicited) does that make it litter? I'm sure if it was truly litter that the county would jump on it as a means to fine those doing it.

If it's not something you want, have made repeated calls asking that it be stopped and they continue to throw it in your yard, wouldn't this apply?
I intended to ask for the name of the person responsible during my next call and inform them I wanted a name to put on the police complaint.
