Beagles and fences...

Be about it
There's a fence in our yard intalled by the previous owner. It was up for a year, and he didn't treat it or take care of it, and it's buckled and crappy looking. I hate it! Also, our beagle eats the fence posts so bad in some areas that we've had to replace tons of them. I'd love to just take the fence down until such point that we can afford a vinyl or composite fence, but our only other option for the dogs (beagle and pug) would be an electric fence. The pug would be fine w/the electric fence, as we had one at our old house. Plus, she could care less about passing dogs, etc... The beagle, on the other hand, concerns me. I really don't think that an electrice fence will contain him. Do I have any other options, besides keeping up the horrific looking fence that's back there? I don't really want to leash walk him b/c he loves to run around in the yard. Do I stand a chance keeping him in the yard w/an electric fence?

Some people swear by them. Personally, I wouldn't trust my dog's safety to an electric fence. We have one but we added AFTER Abbey started jumping our VERY EXPENSIVE  wood/chain link fence.

She will even go over the fence (and through the electric fence) if she's tempted by something. She hasn't done that in a long time though.

The rescue folks wouldn't let us adopt cute little Eddie the beagle because we didn't have a fence. :bawl:

Any beagle with a mind of their own, and a good scent to follow will blow right thru an electric fence.
How about putting up chain link?

I had a similar conversation w/my neighbor today! He has several Beagles-he tried the electronic collar, invisible fencing as well as chain link fencing-all w/out much success. The neighbor ended up building a huge compound w/a lid on top of it, set in concrete…every day he sits there watching the dogs eye the kennel from one end to the other-plotting and planning. I’m sure the day will come when I find some of them fuzzy faces sitting on my porch w/my pack! :lmao: Good luck! :yay:

Man... I'm not sure what to do then. Rats.
Cheap solution:
Wireless electronic fence. You can get one on eBay for under $200.

After the dog goes thru the fence, it shocks for something like 5 seconds every 30 until the dog returns to the property. Buddy got one for his dogs. 1 really well behaved. 1 thickheaded like a beagle. That one ran thru at full speed and made it less than 100 yards before turning back for the property to stop the shocking.

The boundary is adjustable by changing the power setting on the transmitter. Something like <10' to 180' circle.

You can always buy one at the pet store, try it out for a week and then return it if your beagle won't pay attention to it. Set the power low enough for the circle to be fully inside your fence and see how it goes.
