I will agree with Magnum.....buy something used, if you decide that it's not for you, it's easier to part with a $100 axe rather than $200-300.
Also I stronlg suggest you purchase an accoustic first, it will help you condition your fingers and muscle memory. If you just dive right into an electric you will easily fall into quick playing.
Once you get it...before you try anything i suggest finger exercises....chords/strumming will come soon enough...starting out with exercises will help in the long run.
