Behavioral Issues

well I am not in an apartment at this time. I am on a farm and he gets lots of exercise.

Hmm. How old is he and have you had him since he was a pup? As far as crate training, to start out I'd put the crate in the room with you when you're watching tv or relaxing or cooking in the kitchen, etc. When he starts to dig or bark, spray him with a water (in a spray bottle) or shake a can of pennies or something to get his attention and stop the behavior. He needs to learn it's ok to be in the crate. Eventually he'll settle down and accept being in the crate.

Is it one certain spot or is it all over? Has something been spilled on the rug that he finds appealing? Maybe cleaning the carpets??[/QUOTE

Only one spot.

lets guess... its near a door?

have you tried to work him in agility or something? give him a toy that would stimulate his mind while you were gone? have you done obedience with him?

These are busy body dogs and need something to do 24/7… they are terriers!!!

Cats can tear the H*ll outta carpet & furniture too. I have a leather recliner and a couch to prove it.....little turd.....her claws are like razors

Mine are declawed. I've always prefered cats over dogs. I think that cats are easier to take care of. If you want to go away for the weekend, a cat can take care of itself as to you have to find someone to watch a dog.

I have had him since he was 8 weeks. He does have basic obedience training. He is pretty good for the most part. However he developed this habit of chewing the carpet when he is left alone. The carpet near the a door in the hall way is his carpet of choice. That is why it is so bazaar. I could prob understand if it were near the door to the outside. I have plenty of chew toys for him and our vet reccomended we do 15 to 20 minutes more of walk time and that has not worked either.

I would get him a toy that he has to use his mind... Clippers Canine Cafe sells this pyrimid toy that you put food/treats inside and the dog has to figure out how to move it around to get it out. most dogs cant pick it up and drop it to bust it up...
Marrow Bone with peanut butter.. place in freezer and freeze.... put him in crate with it and let him work on that while you are home.

You KNOW we're gonna get unnecessary comments because this is a DOG thread, right? But since you mention it; yes cats are easier to take care of; they take care of themselves. Just give my Ribbons an open window so she can see outside; and a warm place to curl up, and she's happy.

Keeping a dog penned up all day just seems mean; if you don't have a fenced yard or somewhere for pup to run around. JMO

He may have seperation anxiety. One of my dogs has this, and we have to crate her when we leave or she will eat my house. If he has chipped his teeth from crating, I would try a muzzle. Good luck!

One of my dogs use to chew the carpet and after a good spanking and us watching her and yelling NO everytime she would go near it, she stopped. The other dog bit the metal bars in his crate (how he bent them I have no clue, cause we cant fix them) but I think his teeth hurt afterwards and he never did it again. We cover the spots in the carpet where she tore it up, and she went back to it once and hasnt since. Just gate that part of the house off while you cant see him or supervise him, we always use a babygate so the dogs cant get into rooms (such as where the chewed carpet is, and in the litter box room) and that really helps. Gates are inexpensive and it really works. Good luck!!

all 4 of my dogs crate when Im at work... and have no problem doing this. This is safer for them! I dont have to worry about them getting in scuffles with each other when Im gone, or eating something they shouldn't! (3000+ foreign body surgery... no thanks)

Heck.. my hounds would eat the whole house if left alone.

But they are out when I get home and most days get their fair share of fun.

(when I work at the vet.. I take them with me... I work a 17hr shift... they crate up there also... with no problem.. and then go home to sleep some more)
