Best St. Mary's County Beach

Hi,

I'm going to take some photos of my kiddo this weekend and would like a beach scene as the background. I know there are a few small beaches in the county, but wondered which might be best for scenery, shell collecting, etc. I'd like to stay in the St. Mary's County area...any thoughts? Someone mentioned the Breton Bay beach to me as one that's nearby...has anyone been? Greenwell Park is a beautiful area, but unfortunately I found that there's a water advisory for one of the water areas surrounding the park. I'm not sure which one they're referring to since I've only been to the park once. (Does anyone know if it's the beach they're referring to or something on a trail that we wouldn't pass by?) Thanks in advance for any advice! :flowers:

Which ever one isn't closed due to too much fecal matter in the water. (Because there is apparently an acceptable level)

You aren't going to find much in the way of shells anywhere, except oyster. If you want to hike about a half mile Myrtle Point is photo friendly. All the way out to the point. Nice fallen trees to pose on etc. If you want to find some sharks teeth I'd recommend Frog Ponds in Calvert. Can't swim there. though. If you let them swim at Myrtle Point there is a serious drop off on the side facing the Solomons Bridge out toward the point. Once around the point you're fine.

The beach at the Piney Point lighthouse is very nice...Lighthouse Rd.

I like the Piney Point idea since it's a bit closer to home. Silly question, but since I haven't been there before, is there parking available? I did the Mapquest directions and it said to go down Piney Point road for 7.5 miles before turning on Lighthouse Rd. for another mile. Any landmarks at the end so that I know I'm not parking in someone's yard, etc.? Just want to make sure I'm in the spot you suggested...

You can swim at Flag Ponds. I just went there July 4th and people were swimming there...granted the water is very shallow but its a very nice beach area. They have decent bathrooms and a shower to rinse the sand off.

Piney Point is smelly from NuStar.

You have to go all the way to the end of Lighthouse Rd - to the musem parking lot. All the beach before the actual light house is private property.
