That's one of the only bars left of the once very many here on 249. I once owned the largest of them all..but there were a half dozen at least...

Chief's, Tall Timbers (back when it was a night club with bands), Tall Timbers Tavern, Oakwood Lodge, Elsie D's, Old Country Inn, HappyLand, Swann's

For a VERY short time it was Club New York (or something like that). First bar I had ever been in that had a walk through metal detector. Then it reverted back to it's original state.

I've heard rumors that they are going to reopen that.
It has been very nicely restored but isn't going to open as a regular business....certainly not as its original incarnation. A few private events is all that its planned for now.

That sounds a lot more like what I heard as well.

The BF used to hang out there on occasion after softball - years and years ago. Still goes there once in a while. Anyhoo long story short, there was a Betty Russell in the obits recently and I was wondering if it was the same Betty Russell. "Familiar" because someone would probably have to know the owners to know if it was the same person or not.

yep. Rick had that, then helped Greg start up Gridiron, then started the restaurant at Chief's in Tall Timbers and then the "Riverside" at Dennis Point Marina, where Capt. Pat's is now.
I wonder if Captain Pat's will be staying. We were there a few weeks ago for dinner and they were talking about Dennis Point being sold and seemed a little unsure of their future. That would really suck if they had to pack up and set up all over again.

I have great memories of Russell"s. Many moons ago it was our go to. Close to home and safe. I was a bit of a pool shark and surprised a lot of men (and took their money). Betty was a smart woman and she liked me. Robert (her son) was a friend to everyone. If you asked for a light drink he was sure to double it.... lol 2 drinks was my limit. They had horseshoe tournaments and picnics for families on Sundays. Good times

I had a customer tonight at Lowe's who had on a Chief's sweatshirt. I told him the place had been mentioned here.
He said he was going to look up the thread.

Are they the ones in front with lots of little panes of glass? If so they look awesome...first time I've seen it in daylight.
Yeppers, those are the ones. 42 of those buggers all-round the building. He hired the company that I used to work for, but I personally made them. They are made of Sapele Mahogany for longevity.
