Keep an eye on the children with the larger heads.

Often times it can be an indication of autism or encephalitis.
That is pure B/S. Definitely not an indication of autism. As a matter of fact autistic children are absolutely normal looking. You can't tell by looking at them that they are autistic. Believe me I am the forum expert on autism.

You can tell an autistic child by the time he's around 2 or 3 by his actions and speech or lack of speech. Eyeballing is a common autistic trait. Hand movements, screeeming (due to the fact that they are frustrated because they can't communicate), irritation by certain noises, i.e. fire alarms, smoke detectors, etc. Autistics with unusual musical or mathmatical abilities are called savates. They are not common. Not all autistics have an exceptional ability. Autistics can also be very violent. Alot of these things can be overcome with constant education and training, medication, and age. An autistic person will never be normal although there have been exceptions. Know an autistic woman that became a vet. She still has trouble with her social skills. Autistics are very anti-social.

Thanks for the info. I have read some about autism and the many forms it takes. The savants you mention only occur in less than 10% of all cases of autism, but when it does, it is amazing.

I've read many books on the subject as well as medical books on the medications and their effects. Had to. Sometimes I wish my son was a savant, but then I'm glad he didn't turn out that way. He's very a high functioning autistic. Forgot to mention that only 1 in 10,000 children are autistic. I look at that figure and ask myself "why my son?"

As far as the savant thing...in Rain Man was Raymond austistic, did he have some other affliction? He was a savant, correct?

Dustin Hoffman did a great job in the portrail of an autistic adult. Raymond was autistic and was a savant. He could do things with numbers and cards. They have great memories. My son remembers details of things that happened years ago that I've forgotten.
