My son still refuses to sleep in his crib, so we're still allowing him to sleep in his play yard each night (approved by his pediatrician) but we have the standard Eddie Bauer play yard and I'd like to get him something bigger(he's 10 months on Friday), does anyone know of any playpens or play yards/pack and play, etc that are not rectangle but square and offer the changing area? I've found larger play pens, but none have the convenience of a changing tray/area. Thanks to any ideas !! I've searched amazon, google, diapers.com, etc.

Must be your first kid.

Put him in his crib. Turn out lights. Leave room. Shut door. Ignore crying. Silence will start eventually.

Translation: You're the parent. Act like it. If you let him set the rules now, you're screwed.

Amen!

P.S. A blanket on the floor works perfectly well as a changing table too. Save your money.

Your very presumptuous answer begs me to believe you must have all the answers !! for a second, I thought this might be an option for positive feedback...I only WISH I had the genius to think of leaving him cry it out first, :sarcasm:

I apologize for not having more children. I've also done the research and was simply asking a product recommendation and wasn't soliciting parental advice but thanks and I'll be sure to pass your opinions on to his pediatrician.

Keep an eye out at yard sales. I picked up a brand new full sized pack 'n play (though I can't imagine "packing" it up quickly, the thing is a beast!) that has an attached changing table for like $20. I don't think it was ever used... when I pulled it out of the box it still had all the plastic sleeves on the parts.

ETA: Depending on how much your munchkin weighs (mine is at like 23lb now) I'm not sure I'd totally trust the changing table. I don't remember the weight limits... I usually just change him on the floor or bed now because he's so squirmy! Though the changing table DOES have a tie down... Hmm...

IMO Joovy has the largest playard available. FYI: they aren't cheap.

Yeah !! Those look great !! Thank you !!!

Graco Pack 'n Play - Bugs Quilt TotBlock - Graco - Babies "R" Us

They are really nice, They also have another brand at Babies R'us in waldorf that is the same size but much cheaper. My sister in law got the cheaper brand and has never had a problem out of it. I would highly recomend going for that one and changing diapers on a blanket or changing pad not attatched.

Also I would not say his reluctance to sleep in a crib is an only child thing but more of a "every kid is different" thing. As a mom I would definitely say you have to pick your battles and if there is a safe alternative (such as a play yard) there is no harm in using it. They would sleep in it if your traveling so whats the difference.

He is just trying to give you advice. Many of us have several children and have been exactly where you are at now. We are speaking from experience and trying to help you from making a mistake.

Just something to keep in mind.........

If he is refusing to sleep in his crib and sleeps fine in the Eddie Bauer play yard you have, by getting a new one you may find he won't sleep in that either. Maybe he just likes the smaller space, much like a newborn likes to be swaddled. He might just feel like he's swaddled in the smaller space and feels safe.

I'd hate for you to waste money on something that may be just that, a waste of money if he won't sleep in that.

We still use our Chicco play yard and our son is 22 months old. He still fits with some room to grow, but we use it with the MamaDoo Kids foldable mattress topper to make it comfortable for him. We take both items with us when we visit family or travel. Good luck!

Thank you and I understand you and most are speaking from experience, which is why I ever bothered to ask. However, when people resort to "you're the parent, act like it".... honestly how would you like anyone to respond?

We are going to try and take the play yard we currently have and what he sleeps in and move it up to the nursery to try and figure out if it's the actual room or the crib that is freaking the baby out.

The Dr. thinks it's because he is associating the crib OR nursery with being sick and that's why he may be reacting the way he is.

Hmm definitely possible!

The bigger sized play yards are kind of neat, but one thing to think about is kiddo's comfort. I'm guessing the bottoms are probably rock hard... meant for playing rather than snoozing. With the square shape it would be tough to find a mattress or something that would fit in there. Not to mention sheets, etc.

Just a couple considerations before you go out and spend a bunch of money :huggy:

Trust me. You need to set the standard of behavior now. Not try to modify it when the child is 3. If you let them pick where they will/will not sleep now, then you will be fighting that battle for a LONG time. Once the pattern is established, you will have one heck of a fight on your hands to change it. Which would you prefer: "If I scream long enough, Mommy gives in and gives me what I want, so LET'S START SCREAMING!!!!!!!" or "Well, Mommy does not give in to my pitching a fit, so I am not going to throw one, I'm just going to do what I've been told." Children learn REAL FAST what works, what doesn't work to get what they want.

Not to mention..when he is 10 months he is easily confined to a crib. When he's older he won't be crying. And banging his head, hell be running around breaking stuff and the fit expands considerably :lmao:

I understand its hard to see your kid upset but it could be he made an association with being sidk..but more likely he made the association that crying gets him a sleeping buddy :killingme
all you have to do is rock him till he's sleepy and put him in there..some calming music helps and he will cry and scream but I promise it won't last long. My baby slept with me for quite awhile and transitioning her to the crib was simple ..just waited until she could barely keep her eyes open rocked her a bit and put her in. She cried maybe 10 or 15 min and fell asleep sitting up against the rails :lmao: her father was beside himself with her cryihg but I knew she was safe and dry and fed so it didn't bother me..the next few nights she cried again..but now I put her in, she rolls over and is out. All it takes is sticking it out for a bit..I PROMISE you are not gonna harm his brain or give him a complex or harm is development or make hima deviant..I know those are momma fears, I feel em sometimes. But it'll be ok, I've never had a patient tell me they were messed up because their mom made them sleep in their own bed..in fact many had issues with not having had normal regular patterns, habits, and schedules. :huggy:

I'm happy to report Chase is now sleeping in his crib, despite me being the "knowitall" youngin :sarcasm: and not letting him cry it out. But, we figured out what was causing the genuine fear and anxiety about the crib and rectified it. He's now sleeping happily in his crib. :yahoo:

So is the crib now in the living room or your bedroom?
