Unless you already own a Harley. 40-42MPG is a good thingaps45819 said:...and in 50 years, you'll offset the cost of the bike by what you save on gas![]()
Small city bikes/scooters get in excess of 50 mpg, will run at highway speed and sell new for around $3k.
This one sells for $2.4k, 80cc automatic, should run fast enough for Rt.235.
My understanding is based on what I was taught back in the '70s while learning to drive, but it goes like this: Off-base, people in crosswalks don't have the right-of-way unless the intersection is controlled by a light and the ligt is red for the lane being crossed. In all other respects, you yield the right-of-way as you would in a car.Triggerfish said:Oh yeah......I was crossing the street today in front of the base theater at around 6:45AM. There were a lot of us since it was the day for our advancement test. This one guy stopped but no one else stopped. He was POed that no one was stopping so he started to yell at them to stop. Too bad there weren't any cops around. I don't know the laws outside but if someone doesn't stop for a pedistrian in a cross walk it's an automatic fine on base.
Wrong. In Maryland, at a controlled crosswalk (with "walk/do not walk" indicators), pedestrians do not have the right of way and can only cross on signal. At all other marked crosswalks the pedestrian does have the right of way, yet they cannot just step out in front of traffic that does not have a chance to yield.Railroad said:My understanding is based on what I was taught back in the '70s while learning to drive, but it goes like this: Off-base, people in crosswalks don't have the right-of-way unless the intersection is controlled by a light and the ligt is red for the lane being crossed. I learned in the Navy that on-base, vehicles are supposed to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
Get the scooter, it will keep up with traffic and the lowlifes don't want them so he won't get shot for itStarCat said:My husband was talking about riding his bike to work from now on, but we live in PG, and he has to ride to DC. I suppose it would be safe for him to do that, trafficwise, but I'm afraid he might get shot. Its a REALLY long ways too.

This all sounds like a personal problem for the socially-challenged biker.David said:I used to actively bike years ago. IMHO, soMD is not bicycle friendly:
- You have alot of people with attitudes like that expressed by BuddyLee above. There were always the socially-challenged people who would come up behind you and try and spook you by hanging out the window and screaming at the top of their lungs. There was also the occassional projectile like a loaded Big Gulp. Quality people!
- Few roads have shoulders, let alone safe shoulders. The new section of 235 has bike lanes. But, I would bet that at least 50% of the local drivers have no idea what they are for or how to deal with a bike in that lane.
- The shoulders that do exist are usually littered with broken glass discarded by the drunks and socially-challenged people who think it is OK to throw their empties out the window.
- There aren't nearly enough police patrolling the local roads during rush hour to deal with aggressive drivers.
There are a few good local bike clubs. You can always seek their opinion about bicycle commuting.

I would light myself up like a Christmas tree as the days get shorter going into the winter.
