It's not real safe to ride a horse along the road, wide shoulder or not...

Wait a second, is this going to be a bike trail for horses. Maybe we should make riding paths for 4 wheel drive vehicles too. We could even get the state to put in a mud pit or two. Or maybe just one trail where you can ride whatever you want on it. To hell with safety or proper use of tax money.

I hear that around St. Mary's Lake you can get a really good work out.

I am a native somd'er and an avid supporter of the bike trail. We need safe places to take our families biking. I wouldn't want my kids biking the shoulders of some of the local roads. If you are interested in the trail project, there is a County Commissioners meeting at 4 this afternoon to discuss the project. Use this opportunity to show your support.

I caught a bit of this story on the radio coming in today. They are talking about the old RR spur running from Hughesville to California. This thing was handed over to the county as a trail 25 years ago... Maybe more.

Those that live along it should already know the status of this right of way and it's potential impact. Too late to fuss about it now since it's been there since the 1940's.

Sierra,

I would have given the St. Mary's link instead of Calvert but they can still find it.

While I think the need for a bike trail is minimal others might see it as a significant need. No need to continue with that debate as I doubt if we could sway one another. What I want to know now is, if it comes about what will it cost to prepare the path, maintain it, and protect it and those that will use it? Will there be user fees or will it be free (paid by tax revenue)? Will it be lit or just a daylight operation? What are the specific plans for the abandonded rail line? BTW, anyone remember the train using the tracks? I do, it used to shake some houses in Hollywood when it would roll by.

I think they are setting a max weight limit for users of the trail as to not reproduce this problem :)

What did the old rail line haul in and out of here, anyways?

The comment about the train shaking the houses was a fond nostalgic memory of mine, but it is nice to see that those planning on using it are already thinking about limiting others from doing so.

The train ran solely for the base (to the best of my knowledge) bringing in all the supplies, parts, and equipment that the limited roadways couldn't handle.

Ah ok, so it was a cargo train, not a passenger one. Being from an area that is a pretty large railroad hub, I can say I am glad there are not any down here.. The noise.. The waiting at railroad crossings.. ugh. Then again, I nice light rail from here to DC would be nice :)

I just hope the trail actually takes shape. Seems like everyone is preaching to stop growth, save nature. Here is a way to save nature (they obviously won't be building anything on the trail) and allow everyone to enjoy it. And all of this yapping about trails bringing more crime to the area.. Please.. More people die fron red light runners that they do on the trails. Ban cars instead..
Just like anywhere else, you don't go out by yourself at night.

Growing up near a trail ( a small one called the Appalachian trail, some of you may have heard of it..), I couldn't think of a better place to have a home (unless of course it was waterfront). I need to contact the people who are complaining about the trail being close to them because if the trail does happen, I want to buy their house . Since they feel that the trail will de-value their home (high crime areas always have lower value, and they say crime will increase) I should be able to get a pretty good deal.

OK, so I'm new, but I'm also old enough to be opinionated

This is my first but surely not last response to the possibility of a new bike trail in So.Md. I too moved from the city to the area looking for a more rural way of life. I like the idea of a bike trail but doubt I'd ever use it. Being what would be considered an avid cyclist I find it annoying to be cruising along a trail only to come across someone walking their dog and consuming the major part of a trail, or how about the team of roller bladers skating side by side doing the same thing? He::, my bikes older than most users here and I thoroughly beileve everyone has the right to do their thing, but I'd like to remind them that everyone out there has their own rights, and shouldn't infringe on the other persons rights, so if we get a trail try to be considerate. I think I'll stick to the roads and take my chances there. I will add that I too don't understand why people move to a rural area and the first thing they want is to change it. Why the heck would you move to the country in the first place? I too enjoy the peace and quiet afforded with living in the country..

OK, go ahead and spam me:barf:

I never really considered southern maryland rural, just out of the way. To get to the rural part you have to go south of the base, and that is only a small portion.

To find my kind of peace and quiet I am moving to the Park Hall area.

The Lexington Park to Hollywood area has all the disadvantages of the urban areas with none of the advantages.

Disadvantages: Crime, Traffic, Sprawl, nothing for kids to do but get in trouble, low brow liqour stores everywhere, the accompanying drunks wandering arround, and a prostitute (yes I saw one the other day even had a sign carrying it arround that said $5 ).

Every generation that moved to St Mary's has changed something from the time it was discovered by the English. Some people just have selective memory.
