That's a touchy situation there. I mean, it's hard to take sides on this.

to a small extent i see your point. People make mistakes and have accidents and we shouldn't automatically throw them to the wolves in some cases.....especially dealing with children.

Saying that Teenage Pregnancy is a problem. We shouldn't go out of our way to enable things we see as a national issue that we already spend time and resources on trying to prevent. I think it is fair that they should find the time to do the required assignments in the hospital or at home, and should be required to complete all exams and test with the other students at the facility.

Just because they chose to be irresponsible, or were just "unlucky", they shouldn't be given special treatment due to a lapse in judgement.

54% of girls 15-17 get pregnant??!!?? Sounds like there is a lot to do around there and the parents are watching over their kids. In the pu$$ified world we live in now, I can see how it's a tough decision. Personally, let them stay home with the newborn without punishment. Once a week have them turn in their homework. If the school has a tutoring program, figure out how they can use it. If not, hopefully they have friends that understand the subjects and are willing to help out. If not, the homework get graded and recorded as is. JMO

It says 54 out of 1000. That's 5.4%

Forgot the decimal point. Still I think it's TOO high.
Yes it is too high. My graduating class was 375 students, figure 200 girls. 5.4% would have been 10-11 girls. But 54 percent would have been over 100 girls. In reality, I think we had about 5.

My initial reaction is if we are punishing girls like that, that is unacceptable...

Why is it unacceptable? They should be punished. Teen pregnancy used to be unacceptable, now it's catered to. This is pure :bs:. Let them get GEDs...

Give them the leave, what's it going to hurt. If they pass their final exams they graduate. Give them some condoms also, and inform them what happens when you have unprotected sex, its obvious they either dont know or dont care.

If you got pregnant on the job, they would treat it like any other illness. Doctor says you are unable to work, you get leave appropriate to what the doctor says and short term disability pay if you are eligible for it.

What do they do with students who have an illness where the doctor tells them not to school for 4-6 weeks? That's what they should do with these girls. They should get medical leave from school. They still have to do the work, but they get to do it at home.

The only problem I see with that plan is those girls who leave the baby with grandma and go running around with their friends and back to their party ways as soon as they leave the hospital. But as long as the doctor doesn't clear them to go back to school, I don't see a way around that without penalizing the girls who are using that time off wisely.

You are giving them way to much credit by saying they don't know.....I challenge you to find me one person who doesn't know what happens when you have unprotected sex.......I think you hit the nail on the head with your latter point. They don't care...

And it is for that reason that I don't care if they graduate. Like someone else said, let them get GED's and get used to saying, "Would you like to try a combo meal."

That is what they do in the St. Marys school district. You get home-schooling until your doctor clears you to go back to school. Two to three times a week your 'teacher' comes by with your work, helps you if you have any questions, and returns your work when it is due.

I have to ask a basic question. What does a four week leave of absence really mean? Does that reset the clock so that we have to have another graduation four weeks later in the year for those who got pricked by cupid's :gossip:? Or is it a four-weeks-of free time (whether you bond with beebee or pass it to granny is irrelevant) that you don't have to attend school or do your school work? Does four weeks or unexcused absence have any more impact than four weeks or excused absence?

I'm for the GED if the can't manage to pass high school. Let's look forward to high taxes to pay for the welfare. But that won't happen since they said they will be going to college when the baby's older and it won't effect their job carreers.

The dumb girls get most of the blame and the responsibilities for the rest of the child's life. I know of a girl who lost her schlorship, after 3 years, because of pregnancy. The father continues school w/o a care in the world. Both should be held just as responsible. I am so tired of females being whoes and males being studs. The children are the real victims.

Uh, yeah.

There is no girl of menstruating age in the US that doesn't know that the female is the one that gets pregnant and carries the child. Yes, the guy should have to take some responsibility, but as long as there is normal biology, the girl will bear the brunt of unwanted pregnancy.

It's just the way it is.

And, since the beginning of time, women have been the socializers and civilizers of humanity, so it's their responsibility to hold the horndogs at bay. If you know that YOU are going to be the one who suffers for irresponsible behavior, then it's up to YOU to control the situation.

And one more thing:

If we want young men to be responsible for their unplanned offspring, how does it make sense that they should have to quit school and not get their education? Ideally we would encourage them to stay in school and go on to college or whatever so they can earn a living and support their child and its mother.

I couldn't agree more.....

Growing up without a father figure in your life sucks, believe me. You can either cry about it and blame everything that goes wrong in your life on it, or you can rise up, ensure you are never responsible for the same, and be an upstanding human being.

I'm pretty sure that most men are legally responsible for their children, as they should be. Granted it doesn't take the place of a man role-model, but what kind of role model leaves a mother high and dry?

There are a lot of cases where women are left to fend for themselves, and it is a shame and is just plain criminal. On the other hand, there are a lot of loving fathers who are good people that are raked over the coals by greedy women who expect them to provide 100% and then some....
