I did not know this.
Was helping (supervising) the planting of blueberry bushes in a new garden on the edge of the woods yesterday. Little foot long black snake made his presence known and thought he was a badass! He was lunging and striking at us!
Then he started rattling his tail. I had never seen a black snake do this.
From what I read on line, they especially like to rattle their tails in tall grass, because they don't have rattles, but the grass will make a lot of noise.
I assume he had a girlfriend there somewhere, but I never saw her. He sure thought he was bad!
