Blone Density Test?

I got my baseline scan at 42. I am due for one before my next gyn appt. in April.

I got my baseline at 32 when my sister and mom started coming down with every known bone disease known to man....I get mine checked about every 5 years or so

There are 2 types of tests that I know of. I've had a simple test done where I stick my foot on this little machine like those cheap foot massager things, it takes a reading at your heel. For me, each time this test has produced results that I have severe bone density issue – my numbers were reading like I should have been triple my age. So after the second alarming quick test, I had a more detailed test done where like mentioned before in this thread, you just lay on a table and they scan you with an xray type machine from the waist down.. I can't tell you anything more after that because this test resulted in I was perfectly normal - well for bone density anyway. Both tests were completely painless.

Thanks for all the responses. I was afraid needles might be involved. Had that been the case, I'd just have to crumble, 'cuz I hates needles.

If you have it done at st marys hosp you just lie on a table. don't even have to get undressed. Just don't wear pants with a zipper or you'll have to undress. If you have a pair of pull on pants that's the way to go. 10 min and your done.

is that the test where they bring the hydraulic plate down and measure the point that the blone crushes under the weight?

If you mean the DEXA scan (bone density test) it's real easy and basically like getting an x-ray. You lie on a table while this scanner is above you and it just scans over you. It only takes about 5-10 minutes.

I just had this one done too and you're right it is just this simple! I was tested because my Mom had Osteoporisis so it's in the family.

yes. Then that's when the needles come into play, cause you're begging for the morophine drip at that point.

Actually I think you're describing a Mammogram - or at least the last one I had!
the breast is an amazing thing.
to think, you can crush it like that and not have the nipple blow off and put somebodies eye out.. simply amazing.
