Bloody watery puke

I've got two indoor cats who are about 9 years old. I saved them from a shelter about 7 years ago so I'm not positive about their age. They eat Science diet indoor cat/hairball control dry food and have a little canned stuff to share every few days. The problem is that they puke daily, my male cat is a hair puller so I find his vomit with big wads of hair in it constantly. Anyway, today I come home and I see watery red liquid puke in two places in the house. This is completely new. It looks like the nasty red-brown liquid from a ground beef package. Both cats seem ok and I don't know which one did it. Should I be real worried? Anybody's cats ever hork up something like this? They go outside only when I'm with them, we have a tall privacy fence up so they can't wander off but can munch some grass and stalk the butterflies. Could eating an ornamental plant cause this you think?

Great thread title :yay:

Have you changed their food recently? Claudia is a picky eater and yaks up anything new I put in her dish. I don't know about Science Diet, but many cat foods have some coloring in it that looks brownish red when they barf it up. So it's probably not really blood. BUT:

If they have the same food they've always had, I'd take both of them to the vet and let the doc take a look at them. Especially the one with the hairball issue.

Did they eat a plant? Some plants are very toxic to cats...and can kill them.

Get some Laxatone or another hairball remedy and give it to them once a week to help them "digest" the hair..it will pass through their system.

I'm not a fan of Science Diet. I feed a very high grade of food, California Natural, but there are others. My cats do not barf at all (since I switched). I did have a problem with the older one a month or so ago, and it was a problem with hairballs, but he's doing really well on the Laxatone.

I don't know anything about cats. I'm not a cat person - I'm a dog person. But your cats are really cute.

Science Diet isn’t a premium cat food? I googled it up and it actually costs more than California Natural. I try not to change their diet much since they are super finicky, they've been eating this food for years. In a pinch I’ve used Iams and they seemed ok with that too.
The multiple vets have said there is nothing wrong with my hair puller, the last one said the next step would be kitty anti-depressants. To which I say bollocks! If I can’t have Prozac my cat can’t either. He seems to do it when he’s bored, it’s like human nail biting, an ugly habit. I can deal with his roving bald patches if he can.
Now the UTI, that could very well be the ticket. It was totally liquid, I just assumed it was puke. They both have always used the litter box, maybe this makes it hard to do so he/she had an accident near the box. I’ll call the vet first thing in the morning. They seem normal enough right now, all hugged up on the couch. I’ll take the cap off the litter box and see if I can figure out who my problem child is. Thanks for the advice ladies!

My cat is an occasional scarf and barfer and she east's Meow Mix Indoor cat formula. She'll be 17 next month.

Oh and they absolutely will not take hairball remedy without a fight, I have to force it in their mouths at great personal peril. If you put it on their fur won't even lick it off, they leave it there and get it all over the furniture. Heck, they won't even eat bits of steak or chicken, I've never seen cats so fussy.

It's very simple..it's a gloppy thing...you just put it in their mouth and they lick it.

People can think I'm crazy..Science Diet isn't good food. Look at the ingredients..educate yourself. I can only give you advice from my experience and research.

Good luck with your cats.

I think my male cat was starved in a previous life. He regularily gorges himself then yaks 30 seconds later. God forbid his bowl is ever actually empty for a few moments, he panics. He will follow you around the house yowling like a lost soul. He has food issues...

Gorgeous kittehs :yay:

I have to agree a lil bit with every body.

Sounds like food
or bloody urine
or they got into a plant

maybe they killed a bug

If it happens frequently I'd be concerned until then .......they'll prolly live.

See, Claude eats grocery store catfood and she's 13 and going strong. So I'm not convinced about the premium catfood.

My cats all eat hairball control Iams and Friskies wet. Everybody is healthy as a horse. Especially Nemo, he takes healthy as a HORSE to new heights! My kitten gets Iams kitten dry and Friskies kitten wet.

Now if it is a uti, waiting with a male cat, is not a good idea. They get crystals in their bladders and it can cause severe problems and sometimes can lead to death in a matter of a few days! So by all means get those cats to the vet and get them checked. :yay:

BS Gal, if you start one called clots, can I start one called Dried used up uterus's? I mean, some of us don't have periods anymore! :lmao:

you just put it in their mouth

Just. You "just" put it in their mouth.

:roflmao:

Claude won't let me get near her with a foreign substance. I used to give Moosie and Katnip hairball remedy and they'd lick it up, but Claudia fights me off, then runs and hides.

Timon has always eaten Cat Chow. That's what his rescue mommy fed him and that's what I buy him. I've had him about 2.5 years and I've seen him "yack" 3 times maybe, but nothing has ever come up. No hairballs ever!
