Blossom: I still breastfeed my 3 & 1/2 year old

LAST month Alicia Silverstone shocked fans with a video of herself feeding her son mouth-to-mouth, before that it was January Jones advising new mums to eat their own placenta and now there's yet another star stepping up to offer her advice to parents.

Mayim Bialik who rose to fame as the free-spirited teenager in '90s sitcom Blossom, has penned a parenting book in which she details how she still breastfeeds her three-and-a-half year-old son Fred and allows her two children to sleep on mattresses on the ground with them at night.

From a nutrition standpoint, we were taught to encourage mother's to continue to breastfeed their children as long as is convenient for them but at a minimum for the first 6 months (if able). They can pump the milk so that they avoid the teeth issue.

Why is our society so freaked out by breastfeeding? If it's what's best for the health of the child and not everyone has the luxury of being able to breastfeed, why isn't it regarded with more respect, encouragement, and understanding?

How the hell do women keep breast feeding after the kid has teeth :twitch:

my daughter got teeth at 5 months-ish..I continued to bf until she was 9-10 months..the teeth dont make a difference..she bit me once, I yelled and moved her away, and she never did it again

I am a huge bf'ing advocate..I think everyone should at least try..but if you are bf'ing a 3 year old...its for yourself, not the kid. kids grow up..and part of that is letting go of them being a baby and encouraging them to be a child who will one day turn into an adult. I have friends whose 2 year olds still drink from bottles ..thats what really makes me :twitch:

So, just out of curiousity, you prefer to switch to the breast milk of a cow or legume at $5+ a gallon, which is shrouded in nutritional controversy, than provide a cheaper, healthier alternative?

More importantly, you'll cast a negative judgement on those that chose to do so?

Shouldn't the kid be eating real food at 3 years old?

If the kid is sucking directly out of the cow's teat, yes, I'd find that odd.

Breast milk is not nutritionally complete for toddlers. Not to mention that as their appetite increase, the mother cannot provide enough food for them. Breastfeeding a toddler is not about the kid, it's about the mother and her emotional needs. Same as when these helicopters get involved in their teenagers' relationships to an unhealthy extent.

"I am important! My child needs me!"

Personally, I couldn't care less what other whackos do to delay their children's maturing. I'll be dead by the time they're able to impact society anyway. But let's call it what it is and not hide behind silly notions of nutrition for the child.

I think any baby should be weaned off of a bottle/nipple/pacifier when they are old enough to eat table food and drink from a cup. JMHO

I weaned two of mine from nipple to cup and never had to break them from a bottle. Actually, they pretty much did it themselves when they were able to use the sippy cup. My first I only nursed until she was 6 months, so she used a bottle until she turned 1. She was the hardest to transition to table food/sippy cup.
